  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 00 318 CI ticking sound from tappet area. 14 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I have been stupid.i have swapped a 1 1/2 yr old mini cooper which was in perfect condition.except for an annoying rattly dashboard ..for a 5 yr old BMW 318 ci..and now i have a big problem. when i start the car from cold..ie after an all night stop. the car starts and sounds like a true BMW.but after the oil has warmed up.it starts to have a clicking sound from around the tappets area. if i then stop the car ,and go back to it,,say 10,20,30 minutes later.when i restart it,,there is an awful tappetty sound for a second or two..then it goes.if i let the car cool again for hrs..it will then sound good again. i have changed the oil 3 times in a month.i didnt trust the garage to put in the correct oil when i bought it. i have used 0w 30...5w 30...15w 50[to thicken it] now i am back on 5w 30..all being fully synthetic.i have not changed the filter once.the whole thing sound clicky wheezy when at its fully warm temps.it drives fantastic,,and looks great..it just starts like a diesel...can any1 give me a ball park figure for a new set of hyraulic lifters incl labour???
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso (2000 - 2010) - The end of my dipstick has fallen off....... 22 Dec 2007 (Forum)
The original one was all yellow but apparently constructed in one piece, and it it failed where the cross section change from square to round, at the start of the calibrated section. My questions are; Do they actually take the sump off - or just bill Citroen for the labour? Looking at the oil I dont belive it has been changed, or would they reuse the old oil?
  • Ask HJ no longer worth it? 24 Aug 2020 (Forum)
I guess when it is time for it's November service, I'll see how much the dealer will charge for just an oil change compared to a year 5 service. Ive noticed the same old questions keep cropping up: what's the best \ cheapest dashcam, what's the best car for a 20 \ 70 year old, what's the best automatic small car etc, etc.
  • 2003 Ford KA Duratec - Strange only-when-warm-low-rpm hesitation! 21 Dec 2011 (Forum)
Nothing seems to fix the problem. I've of course done oil / filter / coolant changes. Bit of back history - before I met my girlfriend she thought the MOT was servicing, so the car did around 3 years and 30k on the same oil etc. I'm not sure if this could be part of the issue...

  • Some people just don't listen... 7 Jan 2004 (Forum)
My father has one of these beasts - a 380, with over 300 000kms on the clock. Over the festive season, he gave it an oil change - long overdue, I must add. filled up with 20W60 (Shell helix - 'for older engines'), and replaced front wheel bearings. The inevitable happened, on Monday, he went out for the day, piled on a few kms.
  • Fiat Brava - tappet noise. 1 Sep 2001 (Forum)
I took it to Fiat in croyodn where an off-duty fiat mechanic told me that it was just some gunge in the tappets, and to do an oil flush, and an oil change, neither of which have made any difference. Not being desperately 'mechanically sympathetic' I wonder if anyone can tell me if this is an early symptom of the classic bravX/marea cambelt failure, and or reccommend a good fiat specialist in the croydon area.

  • Peugeot 207 (2006 - ) - servicing requirements petrol engines 7 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I notice that the service interval for these cars is 2 years/20,000 miles. As I would only cover 12,000 in two years does this really mean the oil would not be changed for 2 years? Seems like a long time to me. culmhead
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - Need service in Stratford upon Avon 23 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Can anyone recommend a good, cheap place in Stratford to get my Golf serviced? It's done 75k miles and I don't think it needs anything more than just an oil change.
  • renault scenic - service light 29 Mar 2007 (Forum)
My wifes scenic 1.5 diesel has done 15000 miles,at about 12000 miles the service warning light came on and the message "service, change oil" shows on the dash. the dealer where the car was bought says the service interval is 18000 or one year. Who knows best, the dealer or the car?

  • Fast Fit Servicing 17 May 2004 (Forum)
National Tyres are currently advertising oil and filter changes for £15 using semi-synthetic. Unfortunately we don't have one around here. Does anybody know any other chain that does a similar thing? (Too many phone calls involved to ring them all-at least that's my excuse).
  • ford fiesta head gasket 18 Apr 2004 (Forum)
My wife drives a ford fiesta 1.8 diesel on an S plate 1998. It's started to lose water and there is a slight oil leak on the head. Obviously the gasket is on it's way out! I would like to have a go at changing the gasket. Is it a good idea or would it be best to let the experts do it?
  • MB C class electronic autoboxes 2 Mar 2002 (Forum)
There are reports of abnormally high failure rates of the MB 722.6 autoboxes between 60-100k. These are no longer given interim oil changes(sealed for life) HJ always recommends such changes. The boxes are also fitted to Jaguar & RR. Has HJ or anyone confirmation of this rumour ? regards Simon
  • Honda Accord UK (1998 - 2003) - 01 2.0 auto 24k - Change the spark plugs ? 15 Jan 2008 (Forum)
World's most infantile question coming up: I now have a Honda Accord 2.0 automatic, which is 7 years old, has 24k on the clock, and has been serviced once in its lifetime. It was used primarily for short journeys and I did an oil and fluids change the moment I got it. However, the fuel economy is absolutely appalling (even for an auto), with it struggling to get 28mpg on A-roads. Having never owned a petrol car before, do these things still need spark plugs changing occasionally?
