Renault Scenic-yes or no? 2 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Lives in London, parking on the street. Will be their only car, so won't just be a runaround. Far from it-will be going to South Of France for hols most years & plenty of weekends away. I've read the HJ car by car breakdown-seems reasonable idea. But before she commits I wondered if any of you have any thoughts? Thank you all. -- http://www.bayingbasset.com -

vw mk3 golf petrol 'thinking time' 14 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Hiya. I'd like to address an annoyance in the above car, which showed up during tour of France some while ago. Essentially it seems to need thinking time between pressing the accelerator for a swift overtake & actually doing it. What I was hoping is there a nice quick & cheap fix for this? A known issue? -
Lease or Buy? 15 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I am either too lazy to do the math, or ignorant of the pitfalls, but am I missing a trick by buying my car, letting it depreciate then stump up more cash for another one? I only do about 6K miles per annum and that includes a couple of thousand on summer hols in France. I like a nice comfy and fairly rapid family job, nothing cheap and cheerful. Has anyone out there been energetic enough to do the math and have enough of a Tefal head to know the pitfalls or gains? -
Renault and the cold 7 Mar 2005 (Forum)
We're off to central France for Easter. They are having a very cold snap at the moment, -20c up in the hills I was told yesterday. We will be going in our Megane but should I have anything done to it to prepare it for a rather unpleasant experience. -
long term storage? 25 Mar 2004 (Forum)
My Dad is on about getting a cheap run-around to leave at his place in France. Thing is though the car would be stood still in the barn for up to 6 months at times over the winter, and I don't think this is particulaly healthy for any car, if indeed it will start at all. He seems to think modern cars can take it in their stride. -
are hard tyres quiet? 16 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Here in France our local tyre place (Speedy)has a special offer on its own brand of tyres that are made for it by Continental. They say that they will guarantee them for 5 years or 40,000kms which suggests they are very hard wearing - does that mean they will be noisy. -
Quality & comfort of ride 23 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Unfortunately all those I have tried so date, like the Jazz (the new one), Yaris, Mercedes 160,& 220 and the small Skoda all ride like bricks. The cars from France seem to be better sprung but I am not over fond of Renault. So far I have not tried those from the Rover group! Does any one have experience of a modern car that can soak up the pot-holes, is quite both inside and out and provides at least two comfortable seats? -

Focus 1.6TDCI Estate - Focus Diesel Problems 13 Sep 2011 (Forum)
First the alternator went last winter - £600 kerching! Had the car serviced before a trip to France in August £450 Kerching! The Ford garage informed that the DPF fluid needed topping up an extra £99 Kerching! At this point we had no idea what a DPF was and that the car had one! Off to France safe in the knowledge that the car was ok or so we thought. 800 miles in on came the engine warning light. -
Audi A3 TDI - CV Boot change 3 Jul 2011 (Forum)
Took the car back to the garage where they said that it was nothing to do with what they had done but they said my steering angle sensor was faulty and would cost over £250 to put right, I also told them at the time that I had noticed that my steering wheel was no longer straight! Anyway they could not fix it until next week. This weekend I had to do a long distance trip to France during which time I noticed a lot of fresh grease over my nearside wheel, so I took it to a French garage. At the Garage in France the mechanic reported that the new CV boot had come off!! While he was fixing that I asked him to check the tracking, which hey presto was way out also! -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Keep or replace? 9 Feb 2008 (Forum)
The problem is, they now have a place in Spain that they visit every six weeks or so, driving down through France, and the car needs to be suitable for this. They fill about 80% of the Mondeo with the seats down, and she is considering downsizing to Focus/Civic size. I think there's probably no point in doing this as she'd not actually get as good a car, but she would rather have a smalller one to park and go about in in the week. -
Renault Talisman 160 edc Initiale Paris estate - Left Hand Drive Car Insurance 1 May 2021 (Forum)
One insurance company has offered to insure the car based on its VIN number whilst it is transferred onto British plates, but the cost is nearly £700 for the first year’s insurance. I do have maximum no claims in France. -

How civilised is Newhaven? 15 Jul 2008 (Forum)
We need to do a quick Blighty run this week from France and we are tempted to use the Dieppe-Newhaven crossing with Transmanche Ferries - seems cheap and convenient. Only problem is - the return ferry leaves Newhaven at 7am on Saturday and we don't know the area. -
Question about car prices in the 1960s. 17 Apr 2008 (Forum)
And since some of the cars were French, what would the respective prices have been had we been buying in France? -
Autoroutes v Motorways 14 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Having just returned from another driving trip to France, about the twelth in the last few years, I am again amazed at the difference between Autoroutes and Motorways. In the 250 miles or so between my home in Glossop and Dover I encountered about 5 or 6 sets of roadworks, the one on the M1 near Luton, where 3 lanes came down to 1, added at least one hour to the journey. -
Volkswagen - No PD Oil In French Supermarkets? 30 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Been on my annual 3 week tour of France. Yet again looked at the shelves for this mythical cheap PD engine oil. In around 6 large supermarkets/hypermarkets. No luck - even the best spec diesel oil seems to meet a very old pre PD VW spec.
