  • ford mondeo r reg 2lt petrol - misfire, under power 3 Apr 2011 (Forum)
I have a r reg 2 lt petrol mondeo. for as long as i can remember it has a had a very slight hesitancy which feels like a misfire when diving too slowly in 4th/5th and is most noticeable at around 30/40 mph, it has not caused me any real problems and i have never bothered to get it looked at. last week i took the car in to a local garage to be checked over as i had a 1500 mile journey to do. they changed the oil, filter and air filter and squirted some stuff in the injectors to clean them. next day drove the car from cold and it was kangarooing, under powered, though idling ok and with the throttle down the problem seem to clear, but i was in a panic!.
  • Citroen C5 2006 1.8 LX - Citroen C5 - any advice good / bad / run away ? 20 Feb 2011 (Forum)
One of my favourite lady friends is looking to change her car as she needs a comfortable mile muncher due to a change in jobs, family living a long way away, and the fact that her 02 Astra is getting through oil like the Queen mother used to get through Gin & tonics.
  • Ford Fiesta - Ford Fiesta 1999 T 1.25 zetec s heater always hot 2 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Hi, i had an issue with my fiesta recently, it was randomly over heating, and the temperature of the heater inside the car was also whatever it decided to be at the time, i wasn't losing coolant or oil, and both were clean from one another. Some times i could do 100 miles trouble free and another i'd do 5 miles and the temp gauge would hit red and coolant would be bubbling away. I changed the thermostat £9, flushed the system, and re-filled the coolant £10 and that never fixed the problem.
  • Sharan 2.0 2001 - Sharan Aircon problem 2 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Have been running the car for the past 300 miles or so with the air con switched off. Ran the engine yesterday to warm it up to change the oil and got some burning smell from the left side of the engine (where the pumps/ drivebelt are. Couldn't see any obvious fault when I inspected the aircon components from under the car. Any help to diagnose and repair would be appreciated.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.6 Which is heater hose for refilling coolant? 30 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I would like to learn how to do stuff like this, but don't find the haynes manual has enough detail for a novice. All I have done in the past is stuff like changing the oil filter and HT leads. The simple stuff really. Whilst i'm at it, what tools would i need to change the Cylinder head temp sensor? Apologies for asking a lot!
  • Mazda MPV (2000 - 2007) - 2003 2.0td - full service or not? 24 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I'm inclined towards getting the cam belt done shortly due to the catastrophic results if it fails but would it be sensible to just get a basic service/oil change done at this point? Cheers!
  • Ford S-MAX (2006 - ) - 2.0 tdci the definitive treatment 25 Oct 2007 (Forum)
There is advise on running in a diesel in the FAQ section, but we wondered whether somebody could give us the definitive on engine care. i.e. Should one avoid supermarket diesel, use any additive, frequency of oil/filter change and any other tips anybody might have? We live in the country and so most runs are 12 miles to town to ferry kids. This is the first new car we have ever had and have bought it for the long haul. we do wonder whether it was such a good idea to go for the diesel option.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 318 auto - what to look for? 16 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Hello all, I've been offered FiL's 318i auto, which I'm intending to buy as soon as he decides what he's changing it for. The car has full BMW service history, and has just had its Inspection 2 at 60,000 miles. I know from the CBCB that I should have the ATF changed on the auto box as BMW won't have done this, but what else should I look out for once I get it?
  • Focus Issues 17 Mar 2006 (Forum)
    f) First thing in the morning, as I drive away, about 10 secs after switching the engine on and as we reverse up the drive there's a single loud bang, which jerks the car and steering. I've changed the oil (to the correct spec), but I fear I'm needing a new clutch (possibly new gearbox) and the louder engine coupled with bang and smoke is worrying, along with the loud thudding that's begun to sound.
  • One for bikers (sorry) 18 Mar 2005 (Forum)
When I lay her over in the curves steering has become very light and not like before when if you chose a line and powered through it the bike stayed on it like a train on rails. Pressures are correct and the head bearings have just been replaced plus fork oil changed. Do new tyres need a break-in period? Could this make a difference? Tom Shaw any ideas? SjB? Anybody? We've got a 1200km run planned for Easter and I don't like the way the bike's behaviour seems to have changed.
  • Breakdown 6 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I guess this goes to show that, no matter how well you maintain an older car, something will eventually go wrong with it. I changed my cam belt at 5 years and 43k, I do 6 monthly/6k oil changes, my car is serviced, anything that goes wrong with it is fixed, and Driving home on the M4 today, I got through the roadworks near Junction 6 and tried to accelerate out in my 1989 Renault 19 1.7.
  • Not getting top speed mph 27 May 2003 (Forum)
Other Camper Van owners, with the same model and conversion, claim to get 75mph out of theirs. Where do I start diagnostics ??? The van has just had a full service and timing belt changed but I still only get 55 - 60mph out of it. Also, at start up, there is a lot of white smoke coming out of the exhaust which clears after a few mins. Oil level is okay and so is the coolant level.

  • Mercedes Benz E-Class W210 (1995 - 2002) - I'm really very very sorry but.... 3 Nov 2007 (Forum)
I went for an immaculate, low miles Mercedes E280 Avantgarde (1999) in May which I absolutely love but in the past few weeks it's started doing some weird things (something gearbox related and something oil related - I don't do things by halves!) but not being able to afford to change, or take the massive drop in value I've decided to keep it and see it through. (I still love it despite it's problems).

  • Toyota Yaris - Gearbox or clutch to blame? 26 Mar 2016 (Forum)
The problem was a lot more pronounced when I just got it (used), at the point that the stick would slip into third rather than 1-st sometimes. Changed oil with some Liqui Moly 75w90 and added some of their gear oil additive and it all made a night and day difference. After all that, it all works fine until  at random times , it still gets a bit hard to engage 1-st and 2-nd.
  • Zafira 1.8 petrol auto 2003 - Cold start problem - please help !! 1 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Had a new radiator fitted first to cure the leak although I know this is nothing to do with this issue, just trying to give all the history I know Thought maybe it was it not getting enough air, so the air intakee valve was stripped and cleaned and replaced with a new air filter at that point Still didn't seem to want to fire, so full set of new plugs were put in, coil pack has been replaced also Oil filter and oil changed Checked fuel pressure, the rail is primed and there is loads of fuel pressure so didn't appear to be a fuel supply issue Took it to a garage, had diagnostics done, ecu reported a faulty crank shaft sensor, replaced this, made no difference (although it has cured the rough idle when it is running) Battery is good, in fact cranked it over with battery attached to a second huge battery at same time and still same issue, so don't think it can be any issue there!
  • VW Golf mk VI 1.6TDi (Oct 2009) - 60K service done - but expensive 3 Apr 2012 (Forum)
It was the 60,000km service - which meant  the following: 1. New Fuel Filter 2. New Air filer 3. New Oil Filter 4. Oil change 5. Electric diagnostic 6. Wheel alignment 7. Two new front tyres   Now, it turns out the front tyres had worn out as a result of tow-out camber.
