  • Woe, Woe, Woe ! 18 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Arrived p.m. to collect car and paid £310+ for additional work, full geometry realignment (tyres wearing unevenly), change auto transmission fluid and gearbox oils, fit reversing light. Next morning, in daylight, look at the lights. Body has been drilled but in wrong place and holes left raw. (Had to paint the holes myself.)

Constantly having to work on it just keep the damned thing running. Now, I bet you could buy a MINI, change the oil every 5000 miles, never do ANYTHING else to it and it would go on for tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of miles. I remember trips to the coast as a kid (early 1970s) when there would be a broken down car every few miles.
  • Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 03 1.4 HDI poor fuel economy, how to identify prob 12 Dec 2009 (Forum)
So my thoughts from the reading I have done so far are MAF sensor could be faulty, or maybe I have a problem with my turbo (the rattling sound). The power delivery seems fine as far as I know. Its due an oil change which I will be doing over the next couple of days. I have already fitted a new air filter from the service kit I bought and it hasn't made any difference. Something else I read were to do with electrovalves, and the EGR valve?
  • Peugeot 205 record? 1 Nov 2000 (Forum)
The latter was necessary after the originals nearly caught fire on the first event. Smoke and smell everywhere and no brakes: quite exciting really! Oil and filters have been changed every 6,000 miles and it certainly paid dividends. I stripped down the engine after 230,000 miles and the machine shop refused to believe me! There was minimal wear in either the bore or the valves.
  • All makes and models - All cars are unreliable according to this site 11 Aug 2016 (Forum)
I fancied something a little nicer than usual: BMW, Audi, VW etc, really don't want to be stuck with a boring old Focus. I’d decided on an Audi TT Mk2 2 litre petrol TFSI Auto, but then I read about the TFSI oil issues and broken timing chains and DSG gear box issues in abundance. Then I decided on a VW Golf 1.4 auto petrol TFSI, but read, on here, the same issues. Then I looked at a BMW 1 and 3 series, too many issues.
  • Corsa CDTI 2004 - LOTS of Black smoke..... 13 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Glow plug and times tested EGR was replaced 12 months ago when the light cam on in the car so isn't very old (less than 250 miles on it) i have removed this and inspected it (there was lots of loose carbon inside but apart that looked like new) Recent new head gasket (no oil in water or water in oil) Compression was checked and was 350psi on each pot (cold and dry) Valve timing, I checked this using the cam tool and a 6 mm drill which i put in the hole in the bottom of the gear box and they lined up fine.
  • Please help me choose a diesel estate car 25 Feb 2013 (Forum)
We also complained about the harsh shifting of the auto transmission. 1,000 Euro later, we have a new alternator, wiper motor, wiper control, and an "oil change" for the tranny.  They said you could not flush this transmission, so the change is the best they could do.  Aside from the tranny, the car was doing well.  But the transmission is still giving us problems.
  • Honda Accord Tourer Diesel: 20k report 13 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I'm going to have a go at it with some leather conditioner to try and get rid of this. I had to change the front tires at 18,000 miles; they weren't completely worn out, but as I was going on holiday, I couldn't leave it any further. Anyway, I don't really like them getting below 3 mm. I've replaced them with Pirelli P6000 Powergy?
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.6 ABS pump 19 Aug 2009 (Forum)
On one occasion I discovered that the service hadnt in fact been done, although I was charged for it, not even the oil was changed. This has come at a very bad time for me because only last week my daughter (for whom I had leased a POLO for 2 years), had the end of lease inspection. The car was in immaculate condition and had only 9000 miles on the clock.
  • F25 BMW X3 - New car run in 4 Sep 2012 (Forum)
Don't they have earnest graduates to phase these things out, or was it too costly , or am i too fussy on this ? Lastly for now , cannot see waiting until May 2014 as per dashboard advice before changing the oil,  that will be done at 1 year. Here's to hopefully nothing to report for a long time

  • Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 93 1.2 Cat red hot, cyl 1 plug carboned, black 31 Jul 2010 (Forum)
So I removed, examined and put back the exhaust from the CAT to the tail pipe, no restrictions whatsoever! Changed Oil and filter The car seemed to be possibly missing a little, so I checked the plugs and found No.1 was thickly furred with carbon. After cleaning, this quickly returned. Reading this (excellent) site and others realised that the problem is probably that cylinder 1 is not firing properly, and that excessive un-burnt fuel from there is being ?
  • Mazda 6 2007 TS 2.0 Diesel - 41000 miles and catastrophic engine failure 4 Jun 2010 (Forum)
It had around 20000 miles on it and a full service history (I was shown receipts to prove it although I now believe it to be non Mazda specialists but genuine Mazda parts) I was really happy and chuffed as it was a fantastic car - it never missed a beat.  I got the car serviced on 25000 miles at a Mazda dealer and I had the oil changed with genuine parts at 37000 miles.  On Saturday past I was driving home with my 1 year old daughter in the car when the car started revving erratically between 5/6000.  White smoke came billowing out of the exhaust and I pulled over and got my daughter out of the car.
  • Corsa 1.2 Vegas Starting Problems 10 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Recently took half a day to service using engine flush as the other half uses the car for short journeys and rocker box can show signs of emulsification. Ran through the basics, flush, oil, filter etc etc. At the same time fitted new pads, discs and arranged for 4 new tyres. Poured a bottle of Wynns Petrol Treatment in prior to driving home from a friends house where the work was carried out.
  • Air-con question - T Reg Peugeot 406 24 Jul 2006 (Forum)
    - I was told on collection that it had been totally out of gas, so they pressure tested it, added extra oil & die, and regassed it, and could find no leaks. (~£85 vat, 1yr warranty) * Brake discs & pads (~£175 vat) * tie-rod replacement (ends worn) (~£100) vat) Now, it came out, and went back in very quickly when copper-slip on this discs & pads made the brakes a little dodgy (and took me a couple of hours sripping down and cleaning after a 100 mile drive when the squealing started and I noticed the problem).
  • HGF 150 miles from home. Fantastic! 21 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Luckily because the failure was quite sudden, and I stopped quite quickly (like I had a choice) no real harm was done and the gasket was changed in about 3-4 hours. We managed to get home by 00:30 Monday morning, just enough time to get some sleep before work and uni. Some of you back roomers must have some better story?s where its was ?
  • help in choosing next car 3 May 2005 (Forum)
(Another disadvantage of the Nissan is that I feel every bump in the road!) Also, not too keen on 20,000 mile service intervals - should the oil be changed more often than this? Plus I am concerned the Lexus will be dearer to run. Lastly, I did think about a Rover 75 / ZT - obviously a lot cheaper, but I know these are supposed to have a good ride.
  • Rover 1.4 SLI with Rover Engine Doctor ! 2 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Thats why I think the engine is ok ie moving mechanics are as normal. Last year I had a Drive belt change, first Ever. long over due could this be the root cause of my problems? Maybe a timing error could cause these symtoms. When shes idling sometimes The Engine management, ( I beleive) is trying to conpensate and the revs go up to 2000 for a second or so, but slowly reduces.
  • Anatomy of a ride 23 Mar 2005 (Forum)
GRowlette slows down and pulls alongside as we enter our sub-division and blows me a kiss.. Arms covered in traffic dirt stuck to the suntan oil. Both Harleys are hot as Hades - the oil temp gauge on mine is reading 220 F despite the oil cooler, but they've never missed a beat, as they never do. Hers is crackling and banging a bit on the over-run, sounds a bit lean, I might change that 55 idle jet to a 57, Since we put the Vance & Hines drag pipes on her bike we haven't looked at the mixture, I'll pull the spark plugs and have a look at that tomorrow.
  • Renault kadjar - Turbo failure on low mileage car Consumer rights? 16 Sep 2023 (Forum)
It's unacceptable to be fair. It might very well be a build up of carbon in pipes restricting oil to turbo bearings but this is a modern turbo engine which is designed not to do unless the car is abused. I would appreciate feedback especially on the CR act 2015.   This isn't wear and tear or abuse.
