  • VAG TDi engine reliability 1 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Has anyone got any tips about maintenance, that goes further than Audi and Haynes manuals? I'm already doing 5,000 mile oil changes like the last owner. I plan to keep it a long time if it's viable so preventative maintenance is well worthwhile. I'm looking for a good garage in either the Harrogate or Carlisle area, I live in one town and work in the other.
  • Rover Metro (1990 - 1995) - 1994? 1.1k series - rough running after HG change. 17 Jan 2008 (Forum)
It wasn't worth spending money getting a pro to do the job, so a couple of amateurs had a go at changing it for the cost of just the headgasket kit. The car drives, and passed an MoT. However, it drives really badly and has done ever since the headgasket change. You can put the accelerator pedal to the floor and the car will actually slow down, it even thinks of stalling.
  • Transit, Boxer, Relay, Movano, Master - Recommend Transit Alternative Economy/Reliability 22 Mar 2024 (Forum)
My thoughts so for - feel free to contradict, correct or add. Transit Very economical. Wet belt a concern. I understand Ford now recommend change at 40K. Need to be careful to use correct oil. Not sure if 2016 - 2019 are any better then older models re rust Boxer, Relay BlueHDi - seems to be most economical, I assume no major issues with timing belts if changed when required.
  • Suzuki Grand Vitara 2009 J20A engine - Valve lash/clearance - Garage recommendation 27 Nov 2021 (Forum)
Current mileage is 70,000 and the engine is sounding a little tappety (Excuse the outdated term).  I'm happy enough doing basic servicing and changing parts but this seems out of my league.   My usual indy didn't seem to think it was a job they could do, due to the tool (Although waiting for confirmation).  I try to support smaller business so I just wondered if anyone knew of somewhere in or near to Surrey that could be relied upon to do this job properly (As opposed to a quick wipe of the cam cover and a change to thicker oil!)
  • Honda CR-V 2.2 diesel 2005 - judder 6 Feb 2016 (Forum)
For the past few months it has developed a judder, initially at around 60mph, now at most speeds.  I have had the drive shafts changed twice using re-conditioned ones, the prop shaft has been disconnected to check that the problem only relates to the front of the vehicle, the oil in the transfer box has been changed, the wheels re-balanced all round and new tyres fitted on front, but the car still has awful judder particularly when accelerating.
  • BMW 116i n45 2006 manufacture year 2005 - Car cranks but will not start 16 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Fuel is pumping good. The car was running smooth without an problems or knocking etc. I also had it serviced oil changes etc 3 weeks prior and also put new spark plugs in. I plugged in code reader and got the P0011 code regarding cam shaft position forward. Could this be the dreaded chain breaking without any warning signs?
  • vw golf tdi 150 2003 - mk4 golf tdi water loss 22 Jan 2013 (Forum)
my temp gauge is erratic. barely moves but on a long motorway run it hit middle. i knew of a water leak but thought i had sorted it with radweld. shorter journeys made the 'check coolant' message show on dash, but never made temp gauge move. a good motorway run made gauge get to middle. then back to nil. then eventually middle again (90f) then went as high as 110, water boiling, but no 'check coolant' message. i do have a replacement stat. car drives fine, though IMO slightly down on fuel economy compared to book figures. recently changed oil. no mayo or sludge. header tank looks sound. no obvious leaks anywhere. engine has only done 61k. could the stat be causing water loss? water pump and cambelt changed 9 months ago. help!
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 02 1.9tdi PD130 starting problems when parked 29 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Had the car from new, estate sport, 110k miles, last 2 years had problems starting when parked nose up ( only a few inches and progressively getting worse ), turns over fine after several mins cranking it starts, runs rough, feels like fuel starvation, fine after 10 seconds of running. ( has worn the starter motor out over time ) When parked nose down starts perfect every time. since problem fuel filter and fuel pipe to PD pump changed ( Known rubbing point under the main air intake tube at the back of the head ) Can not find any air or fuel leaks. Fuel / oil consumption good and never change, regular serviced, otherwise great car - anybody ever solved this one ?
  • Nissan Almera (1995 - 2000) - 96 1.4, Stuck in 1st gear 7 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Stopped the car at a friend's house without turning it off and then put the car in the first gear to drive off and then the gear won't change. Now the gear knob is in a position far below than where you'll have the second gear engaged but the car is definitely in the first gear. I can't change the gear even when the car is switched off.
  • Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 02 1.4 Automatic gearbox 25 Mar 2009 (Forum)
It had one previous owner and fsh so thought it was a good buy. When im driving it seems to be over reving through 1st and 2nd gear change and its not that smooth. Once through that stage its fine through 2nd and 3rd and 3rd and 4th. Its bugging me as I cant pull off quick at a junction incase it loses power etc. I have it booked in tomorrow to change the gearbox oil and see if that works.

  • Toyota - toyota T4 Automatic Gearbox Fluid - Supplier ? 22 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Does anyone know where you can obtain Toyota T4 automatic transmission fluid as used in their newer automatic gearboxes on current shape avensis. Want to do a complete fluid change on a higher mileage vehicle. Not listed on independent toyota parts specilaists websites, and motor-factors don't seem to be able to get hold of it and some haven't heard of it. I don't really want to buy from Main-dealer as oils/fluids always an arm & leg from them.
  • Service History 12 Oct 2005 (Forum)
My dad bought it on instinct rather than paper evidence of servicing. So when did all this change - was it started by the car manufacturers themselves?
  • Can a ball joint wear out in 10k miles? 21 Jun 2005 (Forum)
So, my question is, can a ball joint go from good to "hanging" in 10k miles or are the garage at it? They also want to change the anti-roll bar link as well as it runs through the ball joint. Also, the garage are charging me £11 per litre for oil. This garage used to be good, but I'm not 100% sure any more. I've asked them not to change it so I can seek a 2nd opinion.
  • Puegeot 106 bunny hops! 18 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Had to replace the head gasket when we first go it but ran fine for quite a long time after. No sign of oil in water or vise-versa. Stepper moter seems ok temperature sensor seems to change resistance with temperature. Bosch single point injection. Any ideas ECU throttle/injection, stepper/pot, sensor or wiring?
  • Part-Ex my beat up Saab? 13 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Also, it hasnt had a dealer service for 30k... just DIY oil change, sparks, filters etc... so no stamp in the book since 95K or so. The question is what to do with it... do you think any dealer would want to take it in PX... I have my doubts. Should I try and flog it privately, should I have the bodywork done (perhaps 4-500quid) before I try and do anything with it...
