  • Peugeot 406 HDi - Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI anti polution fault 5 Dec 2011 (Forum)
(see similar threads from   Whatdowepayourroadtaxfor 8 Dec 2008) EVERY time any service garage changes the oil filter, the message " anti polution fault" appears when I drive away, the engine management light stays on, the car goes into "slow" mode (max 3000rpm, then later it's allowed full revs but still with fault on), the engine 'runs on' after switch off, and the garage guy says "..just give it a long hard run and it'll be OK..."!
  • Ford Focus III (2008 - ) - Just spent 30 times normal budget on car 20 Nov 2009 (Forum)
All the manuals are in Italian, can someone confirm that a brand new ford Focus does not need a service until 20,000 KMs ( 12,000 miles ). nothing about a oil change at 600 miles, or is that just a motorcyle thing. also the big black plastic engine cover that covers everything interesting, no visible screws to remove so how does it come off ? Thanks
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 94 1.4 non starter 10 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Not as simple as it may sound! Had a serious head gasket failure. Replaced the gasket and checked and rechecked the timing! Changed oil and filter Engine started first turn of the key. Found considerable hesitancy when throttle floored. Did 50 miles like this and then started to think what trouble could be. Seemed like bad plugs or leads and replaced these, slight improvement.
  • Volkswagen Beetle (1998 - ) - 2001 2.0 engine emissions warning lamp 30 Dec 2008 (Forum)
The light did come on some while ago (c. 40k miles) after VW had installed new piston rings (under warranty) to 'cure' high oil consumption (it didn't cure it at all!). On that occasion they took the car in for 15 minutes and, I believe, did something with the lambda sensor. Could be the same again I guess... Would a fault with the air mass flow meter put it into limp home mode?
  • Citroen Saxo (1997 - 2003) - 1997 1.1 - Limp Home Mode? 23 Aug 2008 (Forum)
So I thought it was a spark plug change needed. As I said, I've only just got the car back and I think the servicing etc has been neglected. The plugs that came out were a beautiful tan color - no issue there then. The auto part I bought was a Denso K20TXR, which seems to be the right plug.
  • Renault Megane (1996 - 1998) - 96 1.4 (8v) Failure to start after running fine - 5 Aug 2008 (Forum)
It didn't seem to pick up cleanly from idle, and the mechanic thought it sounded as though it was running rich. I have recently changed the oil and filter plus new spark plugs 6 weeks ago. It's done about 5000 since the air filter has been replaced. He suggested that perhaps one of the engine management sensors (e.g. CPS) might be faulty, so I've booked it in for a diagnostic plug-in at my local garage.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1998 2.0d - conrod failure. 5 May 2008 (Forum)
Since this day my "Polly Peugeot" has been serviced by the book and treated with TLC I went to Salsibury on Saturday in it (about 150 miles from home), checked oil, water etc before I left!). Just got into Salisbury and BANG - conrod through the side of the block, smashing radiator and starter motor........ no warnings, no lights came on, no change in engine noise - thought I had run over something until I looked in my rear view mirror!!!!!!
  • Mondeo 1998 2.5 Auto 8 Apr 2007 (Forum)
The local ford dealer/garage were unable to ascertain the cause of the fault, because it and gone out when they had the car. I did ask then to check gearbox , which they stated that there was enough oil in the gearbox. It is still happening, I have managed to ascertain that the vibration occurs after the engine has warmed up and happens around 40mph, also when the light flashes the vibration stops.
  • Help needed with my Fiat Punto P reg 20 Mar 2007 (Forum)
There was no water in (But I had only checked my water 2 days before) So took car to a mechanic who found a leaky hose thingy and changed it (Its black and looks like a hose anyway) Then I noticed my water was sometimes fine for weeks and sometimes disappears in days! and Oil not great either??? Then my car started doing bunny hops after a few minutes of running (Normally when I am entering the main road near to my home!)
  • Ideal vehicle for 200k miles in a year? 24 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Should we try to run something for two years or change it after one? Which vehicles would give us the best real-world mpg figures at 70-80mph? Can anybody suggest any other vehicles which might fit the bill? All comments appreciated. Dave.
  • heard this on QVC - Surely not! 10 Feb 2005 (Forum)
They were selling a product called greased lightening you know the stuff, put this potion in your engine oil this one into your fuel your car will drive like new, you'll double your miles per gallon, you'll become more attractive to the opposite sex blah blah blah. They guy talked for over half an hour about this stuff!!!!!
  • Good garages 14 Nov 2002 (Forum)
He was told the gearbox had a crack in it and would have to be removed and stripped down at a price of £800! It turned out to be a leaking drive flange oil seal. Most garages seem only interested in money than good service and do not like it when people challenge them. Any comments on this anyone? [snippette] I removed a couple of bits, just to avoid potential issues.
  • Replacement Car 28 Jan 2002 (Forum)
I will, however, qualify for excess milage which should give me around £1500 for a two year period. If I can get this as a lump sum, I will change the car. I am therefore now looking at replacing my mazda mx6 for another car. I have decided that I need an oil burner, and even though I don't have any childern I am interested in getting an estate (I don't really like hatchbacks or saloons (well the ones I do like I can't afford).
  • Classics for everday use 23 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I have been offered many times more than I paid for it (bye-bye depreciation) and it will do 22 mpg under most circumstances (4.8 liter). Burns no oil between changes on a motor that has done well over 170,000 miles (no doubt becaiuse of being religiously maintained). To those who might argue for conservation vs. gas consumption, I would say the car was made long ago, and its continued use is surely a better use of resources than a Mondeo or similar which is a heap of junk after 3-4 years.
  • Jaguar XKR-S (2008 - ) - Warranty problem after service confusion. 11 Aug 2009 (Forum)
m left thinking that if this damage had been so obvious surely the technician doing the last service (24k) would have noted some anomalies on the record sheet (which I have). It states that there is no engine smoke, oil fine etc etc. Not a single thing wrong with it. I might have expected for them to have noted that there wasn?t any oil present in it, or the oil in there was of a poor quality etc, especially as it might affected a warranty.
  • Peugeot 307 - 2 litre Petrol (2002) - Engine runs roughly 20 secs after cold start 18 Nov 2021 (Forum)
I have also run engine flush through the engine and changed the oil, all after this was fault was occurring as I was told it could be potentially a sticky lifter, however this did not correct the issue either .  Does anyone reading this forum have any idea why the power is being cut from injector (1) for the repeatable period after a cold start?
  • VW Golf 1.4 Estate - First impressions - goodbye Civic hello Golf 23 Oct 2019 (Forum)
Its just been serviced so I wont need to shell out for another year but that will be much more than the Honda which had unbelievably cheap main dealer service with free MoT and breakdown. The VW menu service charge is the usual oil change and checks and the major service is a fixed price but only changes filters if dirty and the plugs if required. It appears the price is the same whether these are done or not. Needless I will insist on all I'm paying for and it'll be off to an indie after the warranty expires.
  • Vauxhall Zafira A - Electrical gremlins or something else? 11 Sep 2017 (Forum)
This in all likelihood is when things mysteriously changed. So at this point I think I need to take the car to an auto-electrician. Can anybody think of anything else I can check or attempt to rule out before I do?
  • Ford Mondeo MK3 2.0 TDCI 2005 - What is wrong with my car? 6 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I did some research into this fault and some people have suggested this may be an EGR fault so I have taken the EGR off and replaced it with a blanking plate to eliminate it from being a fault but it has made no change in the situation. While replacing the EGR I checked the inside of the turbo and found it to not be at fault. There is no oil inside and the turbine blades are undamaged on both exhaust and inlet side.
  • Jaguar 2004 xtype 2.0dci - Egr Valve, blanking plate, management light 23 Apr 2015 (Forum)
I am a complete novice , but feel super confident about doing all the work myself , however I don't want it costing me an arm and a leg. I've had the main run around 6mths now and I treat her well. New fuel filters, air filters, oil filters, oil disks and pads. What ever she needs I will try and please. I want this wagon to last me as it's very clean, has a lovely full black leather interior, nice black walnut kinda trim etc real head turner..
