  • D'oh, why me? 3 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Dabbed stain, rubbed it 'tween finger and thumb...felt oily!, sniffed it..came to conclusion twas brake fluid!. went back in house, changed into "muckys", went back out to car, popped bonnet, checked m/cylinder... full of yellowy stuff, checked power steering... full of red stuff, oil and water o.k. decided to check underneath, so gets humongous tree stump out of shed, lugs it round house to car, jacks front of car up and plonks it on stump.
  • Citroen XM advice 18 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Plan is to get 2 years of usage out of the car minimum - about 15k a year if that. Am capabable of basic servicing but always (for ease) get my oil changed at a fast fit outfit. Am I being stupid looking at these cars? Is their reputation one of those undeserved "myths"? Said specialist would be quite prepared to give a car the "once over" at a reasonable cost which I'll probably do.
  • New user looking for some omega advice 20 Sep 2002 (Forum)
It sounds a little clattery to me, not too serious but not silky smooth as I would expect. Next up is the auto box. Is it a good idea to get the oil changed in the transmission given its high mileage, vauxhall told me theres no need. I find in neutral the car idles very smooth but in drive when stationary (foot brake on) I can feel a little vibration.
  • Death of my Xantia 11 Aug 2002 (Forum)
I have enjoyed the car for 2 years, the mileage now reading 100,000 and I planned to keep it for two more. I looked after it and servicing was carried by me (well regular oil changes) and the more technical bits by a moonlighting Citroen mechanic which kept the bills down. The car always delivered over 45 mpg and more with careful driving. About 3 weeks ago I was tail ending whilst stationary in standing traffic on the M3.

Cheers, they are not back in the office till monday! • Please give me a bus pass - not! 6 Jul 2001 (Forum)
I have not looked in my mirrors but I am just issuing the change to the last customer and have shut the doors so look out I have already pulled out - oops!? Finally just to rub it all in the bus had a wonderful new advertising paint job which prevented you from looking through the back window to see if any passengers were getting up to get off or the bus stopping light was lit after someone had rung the bell.
  • Vauxhall Corsa C 1.7 DI GLS - Lack of Power/Gutless 18 Oct 2011 (Forum)
I bought a second hand fuel pump from a 2004 car that had only done 46,000 miles as the bottom end was knocking after running out of engine oil. 14. I have now ordered new vacuum hoses for the EGR and boost control valves and the hose to the boost unit in case these are collapsing internally. I really am out of ideas now!
  • Subaru Forester - First 2 months and 2,000 miles of ownership 27 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Over the first few weeks I was really disappointed with the drive. It hesitated when I tried to take off, It seemed to kangaroo after gear changes. It has two ECU modes - I for “intelligent” and S for “sport”. I tried changing between the two, but no difference. I was when looking through the manual I found the suggested gear change speeds – in essence you need to keep the revs at about 2,000.
  • SEAT Alhambra 2011 1.4 TSi - Car purchase help 24 Oct 2020 (Forum)
But it's the MOTs past emmisson issue (I'm hoping a new exhaust would have solved this?) and repeated oil leaks which are causing me concern...  The sales guy told me the oil leak was fixed and they put new tyres on, but I'm not convinced. Should ask him if I can see paperwork confirmation that shows that the mot advisories have been fixed?
  • Micra automatic 1.3 1998 - My Micra won't start; Please help !!!!! 8 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Took it to a specialist auto garage who were less than useless, but whilst on the ramp, I now know the sound comes from just inside where the left drive shaft i.e. passenger side, exits the gearbox. Anyway, their answer was to pay £140 to have the transmission oil changed "to see if there is any metal in the oil" and offered not a hint as to what might be wrong with it. Needless to say I did not have the oil changed, but did buy some and topped it up, as it was very slightly low.
  • Ford Focus Estate - My dreadful experience with an Rac car dealer 1 Oct 2018 (Forum)
To cut a very long story short after another 5 to 6 weeks I was told by the rac that there team of experts didnt believe was caused by the clutch and more evidence was needed . I got the car fixed and as there was oil contamited inside the clutch I had that changed and treatment into the gearbox (as I coudnt afford a new gearbox as wel as a clutch ) Although doubting this would be covered in the warranty as the problem existed when I bought the car the garage then applied for this and had it turned down by the rac.
  • VW Crafter CR35 2.5TDI - DPF!!! As usual. 20 Nov 2016 (Forum)
Ok, instead of the normal service intervals of 17,500 miles as advertised and which is why we purchased the van, they have reduced it to have a service every 5,500 miles (which we do in about 3-4 months) and they mention the DPF light coming on is not a fault....i agree, its not - but we have this light come on every approx 4-7 days with the oil levels rising and a huge loss in MPG including when we regen the light does not turn off.. They are apparantly backing this up with the ECU readings, the computer is telling them that we are failing to comply with the correct regen procedure...if there was no problem then why the hell would VW assistance agree to get the van recovered every time & every time its in VW carry out a free oil and filter change.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - My Fiesta - now more confused. 4 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I paid £350 for it, spent £200 on it including drive shaft gaitor, two new decent tyres, new brake fluid float switch, oil change and tow bar removal. Underneath is a little rusty but solid, I cannot see anything bad enough to even warrant an advisory on the MOT and the new sills are still completly solid and showing no signs of rust.

Treat her like my baby with regard to condition/service etc. 85k mileage always taken in to VW dealers for service (prior to service interval dates) always run on premium Mobil one oil etc etc. taken into dealer for 60k cambelt change (at 56k - early)got car back - all seemed above board etc. Over the next 20k noticed car not quite a \'sharp\' as used tobe but put it down to ever increasing mileage etc. decided to change dealer (for service) at 80k service (done early at 76k)because unhappy with original dealer for putting additional items on service that were not carried out.
  • Peugeot 106 1.5d 1995 - Peugeot 106 1.5d 1995 starts, runs but cuts out? 12 Sep 2019 (Forum)
I squeezed the duel primer bulb which was soft and after three squeezes it goes hard and then starts first time. Thinking an air leak maybe? Engine has always had synthetic oil, serviced on the dot and prior to this has been perfect. Oh we had a professionally reconditioned diesel pump when we first bought it so not that. I think there is a fuel pump in the tank from what I have read but don't know much about that, has never been done while we have had it.
  • RAV4 vs Outlander 19 Aug 2016 (Forum)
Having read extensively both seem to have very reliable engines and appear to be vehicles that will last as long as they are maintained correctly, There's no issue with that as I am fastidious with servicing and do an interim oil change at 6k myself so I'd expect long life from them. I do around 17k miles a year mainly motorway with weekly return trips to Cumbria from Manchester so no likely issues with DPFs etc (I hope).

Our 97,000 kilometre Honda Jazz in Thailand was due for a 10,000 kilometre oil change. 'Fully synthetic', plus filter, properly drained from the sump and the engine cleaned up with an air-line all for £42. A rear offside wheel bearing became noisy.
