  • 2009 Ford Mondeo 1.8 Diesel, 125bhp model - Issue with Power Loss 28 Feb 2019 (Forum)
They couldn't even diagnose a sheered turbo that sounded like a cat was stuck in my engine block. The issue started about a month after this got changed. Any and all help is very much appreciated. Last resort is to take it to a diesel specialist. Thanks again! Nathaniel

  • Toyota Carina E - maintenance and accessories 14 Mar 2014 (Forum)
hi to all,  I have just purchased my grandads car for £300 it has 70,000 miles on it and is a toyota carina e 1.8 cdx on an N reg. it has been sat for 2 years my grandad lives in thailand so it hasnt been touched. sorned obvioulsy and mot expired. charged the battery overnight and ticked it over for ten minutes on my dads advice. started first time. i have not moved it or taken the wheels off so i am unsure if the brakes are ceased hopefully not they should just be sticky. it has been 2 years. a taxi driver told me i should check the clutch not sure how to do this. to my knowledge everything works except the radio/cd. which i can replace. was considering putting in a k&n air filter is this worthwhile. any advice other than try not wrapping it round a tree will be appreciated with thanks. i have read that castrol sms is the best for gearbox oil change which i happily take on board. will consider worthwhil modifications if its worth it for the car. i havent driven for 5 years and the car is 18 yrs old. i would imagine there are things on the market i do not know about and i would imagine there to be technology improvements in 20 yrs since the car was manufactured. i read that platinum spark plugs is an option but as far as i know this car has had bosch.
  • Jaguar S Type - Jaguar S type engine issue 28 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Contacted the guy I bought it off who told me he had done some investigation and quote " the engine tapping and pistons do not make that noise when you get a piston go you get a missfire and smoke, ive been told its either a big end tapping in that case you need new shells,or a hyd tappet sized and would need a new one, deff not a piston as the car wasnt misfiring,or smoking" Also wanted to add there is a lot of oil leaking on the underside Now all this sounds alien to me. I have told the guy I want my money back, but I must admit I do like the car and have thought about changing the engine. What would you folks suggest.
  • kia sorento 2011 - kia sorento 2011 dash display gone haywire 16 Apr 2012 (Forum)
All the gauges: revs, temp, speedo, fuel, were dead this morning on start up,  whilst other functions lit up that shouldn't have - fuel warning light light with almost full tank, headlights full beam when lights off. 4-wheel drive lock when not on, etc etc - these would change at random after a while and switch off, then others like battery and oil would come on for a while then go off. throughout this car operated and ran perfectly nornally , plus indicators lights and a/c central locking etc o'k.
  • Honda CR-V - Steering wheel noise 2 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Recently serviced at my local Honda garage (who I deserted in favour of a local garage due to high costs in the past) and told them about the strange grinding noise I could hear when turning on full lock. They said they would change the diff oil and added £60 to the service charge. Two days later and the noise is still there but not so noticeable. I have to go back to the garage as they tell me the centre exhaust is blowing and should be replaced soon (£145) so I have told them the steering noise is still there and they say they will look at it again for me.
  • TOYOTA Celica 00-06 1.8 bhp - Read some scary subjects about TOYOTA Celica 00-06 1 Jul 2010 (Forum)
bought car in February, it has the notorious oil burning issue which these celica's have, make sure you read up about it if your looking to buy one. After taking it back to the garage they replaced the engine to a 2003 facelift Celica engine (Toyota fixed the engine problems in the 52 plate and after models) which had done just  58,000 miles .
  • Audi A3 + S3 - Dealership servicing - Sump threads stripped. 2 Apr 2010 (Forum)
the service rep on the phone asked if anyone else had carried out work on the car (guess he's looking to pass the buck) but i replied only your dealership has ever carried out servicing.  i'd expect the highly trained audi professionals to not screw up a simple oil change! the car is 7 years old and this is the fifth time the sump plug has been out (i have all the service receipts) and the last time it was out was at the same dealership so i assume it was their previous service technician that crossthreaded the plug in and decided not to use his integrity and report it!
  • Suzuki Ignis Sport - V-belt on 6th year service 21 Mar 2010 (Forum)
The rest are brake fluid, oil, etc. They explained to me that the V-belt rarely snaps and that they can inspect it instead, saving me money. Is this true about the V-belt? (should I not worry about them NOT replacing it) I was also concerned about the timing belt but they told me that Suzuki Ignis sport has a chain system (not timing belt - sorry for not using proper terminology, I know little about mechanics...).
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 05 2.0 TDCi Overcooling 18 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I have checked the pipe from the second thermostat (to the oil cooler) and this does not warm significantly. However, the top hose (thermostat housing to radiator inlet) and top of radiator are warm even though the engine does not appear to have reached normal temperature.
  • Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - 05 2.0 Black smoke/knocking noise 2 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I have owned my Mazda 6 Diesel TS2 (136) for approx 18 months now with 140,000m on the clock. First problem I encountered was the dreaded diesel pump change which I have just finished paying for (£1500 in total) but now I have a new fault and was just trying to find some advise or previous experience on this as I have trawled the internet and still non the wiser (i am a woman though!)
  • Ford Escort (1983 - 1990) - Bangers - buying an oldie 19 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Thing is my youngest daughter tried to learn to drive about 9 months ago but couldn't get the hang of gear changes/steering, etc all at the same time (whats that about females being able to multi task?!)... So she gave up... However she's decided to have another go, this time in an Automatic and came back yesterday after her lesson wanting more!
  • Astra/Focus/C4? £3.5K used... or brand new? 12 Nov 2009 (Forum)
About a year ago I posted a few times about changing our second car... a 1998 Citroen TD. After three weeks of looking and not finding anything we re-MOT'd the Citroen at a cost of £350 and it has happily done another year with just the cost of oil and a filter.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - good buy ? 22 Oct 2009 (Forum)
its a July 2001 plate Y reg. 1.4 S, Silver, 3 door. its got a gti rear spoiler, gti alloys, r32 front grill and lexus style rear lights. I gave it £130 worth of service, wipers, spark plugs, oil filter, fully snyth, air filter, fuel filter, topped up steering fluid, mended brake light switch under foot brake. 2 owners full service history, 2 keys and plastic key with number on. handbook. cd/radio/tape/ everything works on it. 1st owner had for 3 years - up to 89K miles 2nd owner 4 years, up to 109K miles, all MOTs and tax and service docs, shows had a cam-belt change at 69K all service and mots add up. even the log book was at his home address. £2100.00 seriously such a decent car, no rot, all panels line up, all original underneath, no leaks in boot, or at rear. no leaks from brake pipes, exhaust still got decent life in it. goes like stink for a 1.4, and such a heavy car. wife just said though she skidded today in wet. looked at parkers and it should have abs.
  • Alfa 156 1.8 Cam belt & big end failure 1 Aug 2007 (Forum)
has had a 156 1.8 twin spark in his workshop. He got in towed in,as the cam belt failed. He had to get the head overhauled due to piston contact. The owner said that she was driving at 15mph when it went. The head was re-installed and new belts and tensioners.3 weeks later it gets towed back in with the big ends knocking. He spoke to the local Alfa garage they said it was common with people who don't check oil levels enough and they run dry. This has we believe been compounded by the higher compression of a rebuilt 60k head with new valves and seats etc. They had rebuilt the bottom ends on 3 cars in the last 6 months.Apparently they are strong bottom ends and can just have the shells replaced. My mate replaced the shells on the bottom end and replaced the sump. The car ran for 3 weeks and again the number 3 big end went again. The journal was fine on both visuals and number 4 is last in line and is fine too.The next issue is the owner, obviously not happy and threatening legal action, claiming that she had spoken to 2 or 3 garages (possibly main dealers) who claim to change all the bottom end shells on a head job!!!!.
  • saab 93 (Y-2000) egr valve faults 6 May 2007 (Forum)
I have owned this car since 11000 miles and at first it was fitted with four egr valves in its first four years. Some brought on the engine management light (EML) some the dealer said were faulty and just changed them. The car has now done over 113,000 miles and the EML comes on when the car had done about 30miles or so. Sometimes its a quick flash that drops it out of cruise control, some times it goes into limp home mode.
  • 51 Mondeo Misfire 19 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Once I've got past the jerking I can accelerate hard and everything seems fine. I've replaced HT leads. Oil and plugs were changed by a main dealer 3-4 months ago. There are no warning lights and a local garage checked the ECU and found no faults. I'm not keen on taking it in to the local Ford garage without some idea of where the problem could lie.
  • Seat Leon TDi 110 Camshaft "Failed" 28 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Over the phone, they told me that there appeared to be no problem with the oil supply to the cylinder head so there was no apparent cause for this problem. Seat, when approached by the garage for a goodwill payment, said "the car's too old & has travelled too far". Which left me rather surprised that a 4 year car should, presumably, expect to suffer a failed camshaft.
  • What car should I buy 9 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I'd like a bit more grunt that Cavalier but I'm likely to buy another Caterham as well to have soem fun in, so ultimate performance isn't a necessity. I don't want to have high servicing costs, £270 for an oil change and to have the rubbers on your windscreen wipers torn isn't my idea of good value for money, another reason why I'm not as keen on the Audi as I would be just frmo the driving experience. I know I don't want a mundano, or even a Focs, so please don't suggest either of these.
  • 96 Escort Zetec 1.8LX Air Leak? 10 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Thought it might be the thermostat but the top radiator hose feels hot, so i assume its working ok? Could the head gasket be on the way out? Theres no white in the oil, which i changed today but the car does feel like its lacking in a bit of power too. I'm not sure if there is one common thing going on here causing all the other symptoms? If anyone can help,or would like me to clarify the above, i'd be grateful!
