  • Ford Fiesta - fiesta 1.25 engine rattle 24 Apr 2011 (Forum)
for a little while now i have noticed a slight rattle when pulling off, once moving it goes, i thought it was a heat shield some where but looking today its coming from the front of the engine around the top end, it only does it under the initial load of accelerating, any ideas what it could be, my first thought was valve clearance, its a 1.25 zetek with 84k on it, apart from oil changes it has never had any work done to it.
  • Ford Ranger 2.5TD - Loud squeal from rear of engine 14 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Will not come back unless I sit in heavy stop start traffic. Plenty of lubrication on camshaft, air blown through oil passages and clear. Turbo swapped but still the same, engine flushed to be on safe side - no change.
  • Nissan Micra K11 2001 - Broken drop link: 40 quid quote 16 Feb 2011 (Forum)
I took my car into KwikFit for an oil + filter change. Although 40 quid seemed a bit steep, I noticed that they had done a "mini MOT" on the vehicle and tested the alternator, battery, tyres etc. They noticed a defective rear brake light.
  • C180K - Mercedes Benz - Loud Humming Noise 23 Oct 2010 (Forum)
My car was recently serviced (Service A) by an authorised Mercedes Benz Service Centre. It has 30000miles on the clock and the following items were replaced - oil change, fuel filter, spark plugs and brake fluid. The car came back with a loud humming/howling noise. The dealer is claiming that this noise is caused by a faulty fuel pump but I am aghast as this problem was not there before and it will cost well over 400 pounds to replace.
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso (2000 - 2010) - 00 1.8 What's green plug near sump for ? 14 Mar 2009 (Forum)

Does anyone know what its for ? I have a pic http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o98/stewart29992000/img173.jpg hope someone can help.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 1999 1.8 Manual gearbox service life ? 1 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Can someone please tell me how many miles and/or years this type of gearbox generally lasts for. Additionally as the service guide that comes with these cars does not mention needing to change the manual gearbox oil, does this mean that most people don't bother to have this done and so just hope for the best ?
  • Honda Civic UK (2001 - 2005) - servicing 2003 2.0 type-R 4 Mar 2008 (Forum)
75000 mile service will be due in the next couple of months. Thing is, Honda want £550 for this one because gearbox oil and sparkplugs will be changed(1st time). Usually, the expensive service costs between £250-300. Across the board, this particular service for MK6 Civic's is the mega expensive one. Any Independent Specialists out there who reckon that they can offer their services at a cheaper rate, then please reply.
  • Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - Getting rid of a lemon with a long MOT 10 Aug 2007 (Forum)
As mention in another thread it has a long MOT but due to severe valve train wear it dosn't always start first time in the mornings (will change the oil to see if it cures it). It has 10 months on the MOT and its a 95 N would I be pushing me luck to ask £250 for it and say £250 as engine needs work but drives fine?
  • Toyota Celica Crunchy Gearbox 17 Apr 2007 (Forum)
This is my first Celica but i am finding that the gearbox is a bit rough (notchy/grating a wee bit) especally when cold but I'm not sure if it's not just the way I'm driving it because matching the revs to the ratio takes a bit of getting used to. Do you think a gear oil change would make any difference here or is this an inherent fault with Celica's. By the way the car is great, I love it (except for the gearbox!).
  • Audi A3 Auto Box 16 Dec 2005 (Forum)
The A3 manual only mentions a fluid level check at 40,000 miles. Would life expectancy be increased by a fluid change soom perhaps to a specialist aftermarket oil. Thanks Charles Fox South Croydon
  • Seat Ibiza - stiff clutch 3 Oct 2005 (Forum)
The guy said the clutch had been replaced (receipted) at about 30k miles). It's now over 50k and well overdue a service, (or at least an oil change). She's learnt to live with the clutch, which isn't any different. However, what's likely to be the cause, and cost of rectification (non dealer..!)
  • galaxy auto gearbox 14 Apr 2005 (Forum)
My 3 yr old galaxy TDI auto has v.quickly lost all drive ability. The problem started with the engine changing down gear as soon as any torque was required and the engine was revving without any transmission. Finally the car just stopped moving. There was no unusual sound from the gearbox. The local ford dealer has checked the auto oil level and says it is OK and believes it in an internal problem with the gearbox which requires specialist knowledge by an auto gearbox repairer.
  • 1st service question 24 Jan 2005 (Forum)
My Jazz is going in for its first service on Tuesday. In the FAQs on running in a new car it recommends having the transmission oil changed after the first year. A few questions on this... Is this a fairly normal request at first services? Being a fairly cynical person where garages are concerned, is there any way of checking that the job has been done as requested or do I just have to take their word for it?
  • Honda Servicing options 20 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I have a 4 year old Civic, so it is out of warranty. It is due its 36k service soon....which is £178 at the Honda dealer. For that I get Oil/Filter, brake fluid changed and 40 or 50 checks. I could do a service myself replacing all fluids/filters/plugs etc for less than half that. What I wont get is the "checks" and a stamp in the service book.
  • Pug 306 fuel filter 11 May 2004 (Forum)
Hello all, My car is a 306 1997 xtdt. i recently changed oil and filter, air and fuel filter. Everything ok except the rubber bulb primer that is used to pump fuel into the new filter is always soft.by that i mean it takes about three or four pumps to firm up even after the car has been run, this isnt a problem as it always starts after being left over night, but i was curious as to why the bulb now goes soft as before it used to stay firm?
  • Scooter longetivity 29 Apr 2004 (Forum)
I own a little 125cc 4 stroke scooter (yamaha) and have always wondered how long the engines last in terms of mileage. I have covered 20,000 miles in two years very reliably, and have changed the oil very regularly i.e. between every 1-2000 miles. Also, it usually gets long journeys that are always more than 5 miles. So, does anybody know here how long I should expect my scooter to last, and what problems I am likely to get from it?
  • Stuck 24mm union nut(Audi autobox drain) 22 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Lovely morning, so I took myself out at some unearthly hour to change the gearbox oil. Unfortunately the union nut (whoever designed it like that - you drain it by undoing the union nut connecting the dipstick/filler pipe to the box) won't shift. Obviously I'd like to get a ring spanner round it, but that just isn't going to be possible (!).
  • Any Lasting Damage? - Toyota Corolla 29 Jan 2004 (Forum)
It has only covered 1500 miles since new last month. Will this journey have done any lasting damage to my car, should I have the oil changed earlier than the initial 10 k service etc??? Thanks
  • Corolla Service 28 May 2003 (Forum)
Local dealer has quoted me £172 for the 20000 mile (2yrs) service on my older style corolla (Y reg). Car has only done 16000 miles in 2 years from new. As this is little more than oil/filter/brake fluid change I consider this a rip off. If I asked my local independent garage to do the service and use Toyota parts does anyone know how this will affect the warranty? Local garage will do it all in for under £100.
  • Cambelts again 10 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Truly, honestly, would you go to the bother of changing the cam belt on a seven year old, absolutely guaranteed 15,000 mile, Peugeot 306 with the 1.8 XU7 lump? Yes, I know what can happen if it fails, but can age alone affect the belt as much as oil weeps (there are none), Ultraviolet light (obviously, there is none!)
