  • The answer is perfectly unclear - engine management light 14 Mar 2010 (Ask HJ)
I bought a Mercedes Benz C220CDI in December 2010 from Mercedes-Benz Bridgend in Wales. So far I've done about 4,600 miles but I have an irritating fault....

  • Are all oil brands of 5W/30 equal? 2 Jan 2020 (Ask HJ)
My car maker advises fully synthetic 5W/30 engine oil. Are all oil brands of 5W/30 equal?
  • Ford C-Max 1.6 Petrol Year 2008 - Intermittent rough running / cutting out with EML 5 Nov 2017 (Forum)
The last time I owned a petrol car they had distributer caps and condensers so I’m a bit out of touch with modern petrol cars but with DPF’s on modern diesels  and only doing about 7000 miles a year thought petrol was the way to go. I have a warranty with the car but the dealer is 50 miles from me and was hoping someone might be able to offer some idea what might be wrong and I could get it fixed local maybe if it was a simple fix.
  • Confused - second hand diesel or petrol estate 22 Feb 2017 (Forum)
I think I need a diesel due to the mileage I travel to work, 62 miles round trip daily 75% of which is dual carriageway and motorway. I'm now worried about DPF and how it's been driven previously obviously affects that. It has to be an estate because I have dogs and it has to be reliable because I can't have a car that's in the garage every five minutes as this would not only cost money but result in time off work.
  • Should I buy a petrol Volkswagen Golf VII Estate 1.4 TSI? 22 Feb 2017 (Ask HJ)
I've decided to trade my Volkswagen Golf TDI for a petrol version for DPF and EGR reasons (I do too much city driving). I'm considering a 2014 Volkswagen...
  • Help needed with prospective used car purchase 17 Oct 2016 (Forum)
I think what made me start looking elsewhere was I read yesterday that DPFs need to be changed (£3000+) or cleaned (£300+) at around the 80k mark. Any advice on any of these points would be appreciated as it seems to be one step forwards and two steps back at the moment.
  • RAV4 vs Outlander 19 Aug 2016 (Forum)
I do around 17k miles a year mainly motorway with weekly return trips to Cumbria from Manchester so no likely issues with DPFs etc (I hope). The draw with the RAV is the remaining warranty and I have always found Toyota dealers to be generally good and helpful.  I do have a local Mitsubish dealer but have never dealt with them.
  • Under 5k miles a year.Should I sell my 140 GTDiese 27 Jun 2016 (Forum)
Reasons I'm considering getting rid: 1) Will pretty much only be used for 10 mile round trip commutes to work in urban traffic - 30mph limits. Likely to cause DPF issues???? 2) 84k miles on clock on 2007 plate - mechanic mentioned turbos would probably need replacing in next few years (this was a year ago) as small amount of oil is appearing around them (or something to that effect).
  • KIA Cee'd - feedback on reliability of high mileage ceed / i30 21 Nov 2015 (Forum)
Given that this age ceed diesels do not have the usual problem areas such as DMFs and DPFs, will the reliability of  this car be similar to a similar age / mileage petrol ceed? There doesn't seem to be many endemic diesel faults mentioned in HJ's car by car breakdown. Nor do a search on the Internet reveal many diesel specific issues (except the odd turbo failure).
  • Buying an executive car 4 Aug 2015 (Ask HJ)
I have been very tempted by some deals on the BMW 520d and Mercedes E220. Would I have any diesel problems on a two year lease? Or should I get a Lexus...
  • Replacing a Citroen DS4 3 Jul 2015 (Ask HJ)
I am thinking about replacing my Citroen DS4 with something more conventional like a C4, Hyundai i30 or Peugeot 308. I drive about 12,000 a year with 15...
  • Mazda 6 2.2D estate TS2 - Mazda 6 2010 engine failure due to oil blockage 25 May 2014 (Forum)
The problem being carbon in the oil sump, blocked strainer, blown turbo charger, replacement ERC valve, scored camshaft, the list goes on. The car has 64,000 ( low mileage for a diesal) on the clock and the DPF filter has regenerated 3 times during the period from April 2010 to Feb 2014. Mazda Coventry are on my side as they sold the car, have the full service history carried out by themselves and have admitted this is a major mechanical failure.

  • Mercedes W203 C220 Diesel - No throttle black smoke 7 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Ive had the Cats cleaned Turbo Intercooler pipes EGR and all vaccum pipes checked cleaned and checked for leaks. Also checked O rings Fuel feed pipes everything fine. There's no DPF on this car either. The only Significant Code that came up stated 'No low Airflow to Charge' and there were secondary codes stating low pressure from fuel pressure rail sensor Low temp from charge sensor Checked cleaned sensors and they're operating fine Also fuel pressure test confirmed no problem there.
  • Ford Mondeo Estate 61 plate - Ford 1.6TDCi & engine malfunction - limp home mode 1 Jan 2014 (Forum)
I've read other posts talk about having replacement injectors / new dpf's but this (i'm told) is all wrong.   Also the problem is common only to 1.6TDCi engines as these have much finer filters (apparently).   Also the technician said this was a "southern" phenomenon as the problem is rarely heard of north of Birmingham.
  • 407 2.0ltr hdi - pugeot 30 Jul 2013 (Forum)
they did the work, replaced the EGR valve and rang me to say collect car, then just as my wife got to the dealership they rang again to say there was a further problem but they didn't know what it was? TODAY,5 days later I get a call saying I need to replace the DPF system at a further cost of £600 I don't know what to do now? I took my car to the garage, three times they said they knew the problem and could fix it three times I have paid for this  and I am now still in the same position as when I first went to them, except for I now have a car that doesn't drive safely but it does have quite a lot of new bits on it!!!!!
  • Please help me choose a car for a long commute 6 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Problems seem to be occuring around the 100k mark (and before in some cases) on these cars with DPF which look expensive. Seems a risky purchase. Honda Accord - Good cars but again don't look great on the MPG front. Audi A6 - As per the Mondeo. I've looked at LPG but that doesn't seem as cost effective as it has been due to rising LPG prices.
  • Any - Dealer Satisfaction when ordering next car 6 Jan 2012 (Forum)
My local vauxhall (network Q) have been servicing the car, twice this year plus intermediate oil change when "change oil now light" came on, another oil change due at 30,000 because i don't trust the dpf regeneration system even though it appears to be working properly, so to avoid a sump contaminated with diesel, I am doing supplementary oil change @ 5000 miles, with each main service every 10000, I have no problem with the costs of the serving at all.
