  • When does a diesel become 'worth it'? 24 Jan 2022 (Forum)
The main reason I ask is due to being interested in older petrol versus diesel cars, and as someone who will do mostly 30-40 min commutes on A & B roads (40-60 MPH) is the likes of a DPF of concern, still? It will get short runs at weekends.  I really like the look of 2.0 TDI VW Golfs, in Match/SE/GT specification, typically there are examples around 80-110K miles, 2009-11, for approx £4000.00.
  • Citroen relay - Citroen relay 2015 2.2l p0016 dtc 17 Jun 2021 (Forum)
A couple of weeks ago I had a loss of power and am struggling to get up hills or get the revs over 2.5/3k but otherwise the vans drivable (no check engine light etc), I’m convinced that there are no more air leaks, I have disconnected the dpf (but not the pre cat) without change, I decided to buy a Lexia 3 last week which gave me a couple of codes relating to the maf so I replaced the earth strap and put the old maf sensor back in which cleared these It also gave me a camshaft sensor signal error code so I replaced that which lead to the p0016 62 error that I currently have, I replaced the camshaft sensor with the old one and got the original error back so I replaced it with another new one and have the p0016 again, I have also now replaced the crankshaft sensor but still have the p0016 error.
  • Ford Focus TDCi 1.6 2006 - MOT fail excessive metered smoke 21 Jul 2017 (Forum)
It's had a new EGR valve recently as the EMS light was on. It runs very well but is a bit smokey at times considering it does also have a DPF. No EMS lights have ever come on though apart from the previous EGR fault, now all clear. It ran like a pig anyway with the EGR issue. Mileage 113k. It has been regularly serviced. It's had a new injector seal replaced recently too.
  • Honda/Mitsubishi/Kia. - 2WD Petrol SUV Advice. 21 Nov 2016 (Forum)
I recently posted a question regarding the 'dreaded dpf filter' as I was looking for a 4X4 diesel SUV without one. Many of you good chaps were more than helpful with your replies and I thank you for that. Having taken note of the advice given, I have finally slapped myself around the back of the head and decided that I can live without the 4X4 aspect and also a diesel (due to my low mileage of maybe 11K annually) isn't actually required.

  • Citroen C5 estate 1,6 Hdi (2006) - Engine cutting Out 4 Apr 2016 (Forum)
Reluctantly considered trading it in, fearing the expense after reading other posts about DPF's injector rails, turbo, fuel pump etc, but the price offered was frankly insulting!  I'd use her as a garden shed before accepting what I was offered!  Please help!!!
  • BMW X1 2016 SDrive - Help with BMW x1 Sdrive Diesel 13 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Weekends, we tend to do a little more driving, so minimum, we will drive for about 30-40 mins. I was reading about how diesel engines work and about DPF. This is a little worrying. Would you think my current life-style would end up messing the expensive filter?    I really like the X1 a lot and after doing loads of research on other models, my only other alternative is Audi A3 Saloon Auto (1.4 Petrol).
  • Automatic SUV for town driving - what do you suggest? 12 Dec 2015 (Ask HJ)

  • VW Golf GT Diesel - VW Customer Service - RNS 510 Satnav unit failure 23 Apr 2015 (Forum)
I have gone with the replacement as a duff RNS 510 would obviously affect resale value of the car - but I feel less than happy with  VW quality and reliability  - the vehicle itself has covered only 27K miles since new but had two reasonably major issues within warranty, relating to the DPF filter and the need to replace the secondary coolant pump. Maybe I should just be "grateful" that it only cost me £550 .....

  • VW Passat 1.9 TDI Estate 11 Nov 2012 (Forum)
However after thinking logically (i.e. not every diesel owner suffers a turbo failure, or countless DMF replacements) we have both come to the conclusion that due to our mileage each year we would be around £700-£800 better off (and that is a conservative estimate) by going diesel. However I'm also aware of potential pitfalls, especially with newer engines with DPFs, and with certain problems with older engines (i.e. 2 litre VW units). I've noticed a couple of the older 1.9 TDIs for sale in an Estate version, obviously well within my budget unlike other engines, and wanted to make sure I am correct in thinking this is generally a reliable unit.

  • Ford S-MAX (2006 - ) - petrol or diesel? 25 Jan 2009 (Forum)
We also have to tow our 1325kg caravan about 10 times a year. We have had diesels for a while, but with all the DPF, DMF etc debate I'm not sure it's worth it. In the S-Max, the 2.0 diesel would suffice but I would really like the 2.2 for a bit more shove especially towing. However, while there are plenty of 2.0's on the used market, there are very few 2.2s and they are very highly priced.
  • Volvo S60 (2010 - ) - Direct injection petrol engine - a good idea? 17 Dec 2008 (Forum)
It's strange to think that the manufacturer with probably the greatest reputation for product longevity and long term reliability in the industry would showcase a technology that is inherently flawed. Or has the green argument won over common sense (as with DPF)? Thoughts? Cheers DP
  • Focus TDCI LX - 90ps or 110ps fitted? 10 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Following further checks by the dealer using the system ford use to track the details of each car they make (forget the name of the system now) they have the car down as having the 1.6 tdci 110ps LX (with DPF). However im getting a bit worried as all of the insurance sites i've been getting quotes from identify the car as a tdci 1.6 90ps (88php) when given the reg number of the car. I had a similar problem with my last car, an MX5.
