Focus Issues 17 Mar 2006 (Forum)
f) First thing in the morning, as I drive away, about 10 secs after switching the engine on and as we reverse up the drive there's a single loud bang, which jerks the car and steering. I've changed the oil (to the correct spec), but I fear I'm needing a new clutch (possibly new gearbox) and the louder engine coupled with bang and smoke is worrying, along with the loud thudding that's begun to sound. -
One for bikers (sorry) 18 Mar 2005 (Forum)
When I lay her over in the curves steering has become very light and not like before when if you chose a line and powered through it the bike stayed on it like a train on rails. Pressures are correct and the head bearings have just been replaced plus fork oil changed. Do new tyres need a break-in period? Could this make a difference? Tom Shaw any ideas? SjB? Anybody? We've got a 1200km run planned for Easter and I don't like the way the bike's behaviour seems to have changed. -
Breakdown 6 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I guess this goes to show that, no matter how well you maintain an older car, something will eventually go wrong with it. I changed my cam belt at 5 years and 43k, I do 6 monthly/6k oil changes, my car is serviced, anything that goes wrong with it is fixed, and Driving home on the M4 today, I got through the roadworks near Junction 6 and tried to accelerate out in my 1989 Renault 19 1.7. -
Not getting top speed mph 27 May 2003 (Forum)
Other Camper Van owners, with the same model and conversion, claim to get 75mph out of theirs. Where do I start diagnostics ??? The van has just had a full service and timing belt changed but I still only get 55 - 60mph out of it. Also, at start up, there is a lot of white smoke coming out of the exhaust which clears after a few mins. Oil level is okay and so is the coolant level. -
Mercedes Benz E-Class W210 (1995 - 2002) - I'm really very very sorry but.... 3 Nov 2007 (Forum)
I went for an immaculate, low miles Mercedes E280 Avantgarde (1999) in May which I absolutely love but in the past few weeks it's started doing some weird things (something gearbox related and something oil related - I don't do things by halves!) but not being able to afford to change, or take the massive drop in value I've decided to keep it and see it through. (I still love it despite it's problems). -

Hello All, I changed my work car, a 2007 Corsa D 1.3CDTI Sxi 95hp for a Seat Toledo 1.6 TDI SE last September and next week am changing my 2013 Audi Q3 2.0TDI SE for a 2015 Audi A4 1.8 TFSI 170ps Se Technik. I thought I would give you a review of how these cars have performed sao far. -
Toyota Yaris - Gearbox or clutch to blame? 26 Mar 2016 (Forum)
The problem was a lot more pronounced when I just got it (used), at the point that the stick would slip into third rather than 1-st sometimes. Changed oil with some Liqui Moly 75w90 and added some of their gear oil additive and it all made a night and day difference. After all that, it all works fine until at random times , it still gets a bit hard to engage 1-st and 2-nd. -
Zafira 1.8 petrol auto 2003 - Cold start problem - please help !! 1 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Had a new radiator fitted first to cure the leak although I know this is nothing to do with this issue, just trying to give all the history I know Thought maybe it was it not getting enough air, so the air intakee valve was stripped and cleaned and replaced with a new air filter at that point Still didn't seem to want to fire, so full set of new plugs were put in, coil pack has been replaced also Oil filter and oil changed Checked fuel pressure, the rail is primed and there is loads of fuel pressure so didn't appear to be a fuel supply issue Took it to a garage, had diagnostics done, ecu reported a faulty crank shaft sensor, replaced this, made no difference (although it has cured the rough idle when it is running) Battery is good, in fact cranked it over with battery attached to a second huge battery at same time and still same issue, so don't think it can be any issue there! -
VW Golf mk VI 1.6TDi (Oct 2009) - 60K service done - but expensive 3 Apr 2012 (Forum)
It was the 60,000km service - which meant the following: 1. New Fuel Filter 2. New Air filer 3. New Oil Filter 4. Oil change 5. Electric diagnostic 6. Wheel alignment 7. Two new front tyres Now, it turns out the front tyres had worn out as a result of tow-out camber. -

Renault Laguna III (2007 - ) - My Supermarket experience gone wrong! 21 Apr 2009 (Forum)
On the trip back it was obvious the tracking was out on the car but then more alarmingly the car computer registered that an oil top up was needed. My concern is that despite my service booklet being stamped by the car supermarket has the service been a token gesture? Surely an oil filter change and top up is 1st base on an annual service. -
Vehicle inspections. 23 Jun 2008 (Forum)
(No doubt 50% of vehicles on the road will show slight seepage at one of their joints and another 50% will show oil seepage.) Oil leaks were not considered a problem by the inspection company . So be warned, an MOT will only cost you £45 and at least they will test the brakes Company name removed in accordance with the name and shame policy -
Land Rover Defender (1946 - ) - Anybody ever washed a paper air filter? 30 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Rinse in washing solution for 5 minutes, rinse in clean water till no further dirt emerges, shake out water and dry at max 60 degC. This can be done a maximum of three times thus extending the change interval to 40,000 miles or 2 years (which ever comes first). "NOTE: Air filter elements without perforated metal covering are not to be cleaned, these must always be replaced." This is not refering to K&N-type filters or oil bath filters but so-called paper ones. -
Mazda MX5 (1989 - 1998) - 96 1.8 smoking engine 2 Oct 2007 (Forum)
With the bonnet open, it was clearly coming from under the righthand-side block, from what I understand to be the cylinderhead. The guy who serviced it said that it had been empty of oil. Recently the powersteering fluid was also completely empty. I replaced it and decided to watch it in case there was a leak, which I mentioned this to the service guys. But on the way home I heard the same groaning noise, so checked the fluid and it appears to be empty again even though the service checklist says it was replaced (the engine was still warm when I checked- perhaps this changes the level?) -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - '98 1.8d Interior water leak & Poor starting. 8 Sep 2007 (Forum)
When I got it last spring I got 420-440 miles per tank, now it's 320. I have had 2 new air filters in 12 months, I have done an oil change (and flushed the system with a cleaner), fitted a new seal to the oil sump (as it was leaking) and used red paste to help with the seal. I keep the tyres inflated to 32psi. For a while it was ok on motorway trips and bad around town, but now it just seems to be bad everywhere! -
Mystery smoke - 1992 rover 827 v6 8 Apr 2006 (Forum)
s the head gasket or a crack in the head and it?s time to rip the engine to pieces. However, there is no oil in the coolant, the coolant level has stayed stable, the oil looks like it could do with a good change but there is no mayonnaise or froth. The engine runs fine (smooth, linear power) and isn?t down on power. -
Vx Omega - how do u switch auto box on? 7 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Hi, having taken my car to be inspected for it's faulty air con unit(bolt had snapped off) causing a new non air con fan belt to be fitted I was faced with another problem. On lifting the bonnet, the oil cap had come loose and the top of the engine block covered in oil. The chap managed to re-seal the cap and it is now fine but he told me as he stated at the time that it was because the engine was fighting aganst the auto box (which he previously said was knackered). -
Budget quick summary 9 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Budget 2003 freezes the duty on road fuel gases 7.31 Budget 2003 increases the duty on rebated gas oil - red diesel - and fuel oil by one penny per litre above revalorisation from Budget day. the Government will introduce a duty differential for sulphur-free fuels of half a penny per litre relative to the rates for ultra-low sulphur fuels from 1 September 2004, to bring forward the availability of this fuel. -
Peugeot 2008 1.2 EAT6 130 - 3 yr progress report 31 Oct 2022 (Forum)
No sign of any superficial rust anywhere on a recent underbody inspection when I swapped the wheels front to back for even tyre wear. 6mm and 7mm remain on its Goodyear Vector4seasons. It's 6,800 miles since I changed the oil and filter on this carefully run-in potent little engine, draining it thoroughly and putting in exactly 3.5 litres of Castrol Magnatec stopstart 0-30 which exactly hit the max mark. Level is now 10mm below the mark.
