  • Short Journeys & Gentle Driving 12 Feb 2004 (Forum)
If not, is there anything I should be doing (especially re rpm) apart from making each journey a *minimum* of three miles and changing oil and filter every 5000 miles? Thanks in anticipation of your help.
  • Fiesta 1.25 slightly lumpy tickover 6 Jan 2004 (Forum)
(Ford ones) Strangely enough, the car performs perfectly otherwise - accelerating and cruising without missing a beat! Also, for the last 5 years, I've been running the car on Costco Chevron fully synth oil , changed every 3000 up until a few months ago when I thought I'd give the Ford stuff a try... Any clues??
  • Running in New Cars 5 Sep 2003 (Forum)
How much of a difference does it make? What would other people recommend? Should I also give it an oil change (a fairly expensive one) every 6 months? As an aside, how damaged (if at all) are the ex-demonstrator models, which have obviously been given a good pasting from birth?
  • Clatter on Nissan 1.6 at 3-4,000 rpm 13 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Only used to occur in the first two miles after a cold start, and was really loud. Now it has thankfully gone away. I got the car at 20k miles, 16 months old. iit happened with the oil Reg Vardy had serviced it with, and also with castrol Magnatec when I changed it. It disappeared shortly after I put in 5w-40 fully synthetic, but this could be a coincidence I suppose. I put it down to a sticky hydraulic tapette which had then freed itself, but recently I finally got around to reading up on my engine - 1.6 16v - and have learned that it does not have hydraulic valve clearances, only the 2 litre does!
  • How to love a banger? 31 Oct 2002 (Forum)
He has bought a K reg 1.5 diesel corsa. One owner, FSH, 80k miles mainly motorway and (get this HJ) oil change every six months from new. There is little chance it will be looked after quite like its previous owner. It will be properly serviced, but what are the basic essentials please, particularly to begin with, to ensure as far as possible a useful and lasting workhorse.
  • Nissan Sunny- sale advice 19 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Timing chain (I suspect) noisy on cold start . otherwise mechanically always kept up to scratch and regular oil /filter changes. fairly cheap insurance and £100tax. Any market you reckon!!!!
  • Car servicing 6 Jan 2022 (Forum)
All garages are happy to quote some sort of type of service  £figure( even a free mot if a service is done at the same time) but what does this include? I think not much. In most instances all non electric vehicles have an oil and filter change at every service but what else is actually DONE rather than just checked. The only way of determining whether an item has been serviced rather than checked is to look at the bill where items such as air filters, plugs, fuel filters, coolants etc have been itemised and usually added to the initially  agreed price of the actual service.
  • Toyota RAV4 xT3 2.2 d 4d. 2006. 120k - Transmission noise 20 May 2020 (Forum)
Hello, I bought this car with slight livable noise, it has developed, there is a noise about 6 x wheel rotation frequency, normal running and even when coasting downhill with engine off, depressiong clutch or light braking, noise is there, kind of scraping, gear/bearing type noise, evident from front of transmission tunel inside the car, changed the nearside wheel bearing, no difference, driveshafts seem to be ok, changed the oil in the gearboxes, all good and clean with no metal particles or chunks. I wonder if its time to replace the transfer box or main gearbox, propshaft universals look ok as does central support bearing.

  • Ford Focus - Rattle on engine stop TDCi 29 Sep 2012 (Forum)
I have recently bought one, 2009 with 134k. I decided that given the high mileage and a rattling sound that it would be prudent to change the clutch, DMF, slave cylinder and gearbox oil (as the car is young and in overall very good condition). Having shelled out for the job, I was disappointed to find there's still a noticeable rattle when you stop the engine, right as it comes to a halt.

  • ford mondeo r reg 2lt petrol - misfire, under power 3 Apr 2011 (Forum)
I have a r reg 2 lt petrol mondeo. for as long as i can remember it has a had a very slight hesitancy which feels like a misfire when diving too slowly in 4th/5th and is most noticeable at around 30/40 mph, it has not caused me any real problems and i have never bothered to get it looked at. last week i took the car in to a local garage to be checked over as i had a 1500 mile journey to do. they changed the oil, filter and air filter and squirted some stuff in the injectors to clean them. next day drove the car from cold and it was kangarooing, under powered, though idling ok and with the throttle down the problem seem to clear, but i was in a panic!.
  • Citroen C5 2006 1.8 LX - Citroen C5 - any advice good / bad / run away ? 20 Feb 2011 (Forum)
One of my favourite lady friends is looking to change her car as she needs a comfortable mile muncher due to a change in jobs, family living a long way away, and the fact that her 02 Astra is getting through oil like the Queen mother used to get through Gin & tonics.
  • Ford Fiesta - Ford Fiesta 1999 T 1.25 zetec s heater always hot 2 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Hi, i had an issue with my fiesta recently, it was randomly over heating, and the temperature of the heater inside the car was also whatever it decided to be at the time, i wasn't losing coolant or oil, and both were clean from one another. Some times i could do 100 miles trouble free and another i'd do 5 miles and the temp gauge would hit red and coolant would be bubbling away. I changed the thermostat £9, flushed the system, and re-filled the coolant £10 and that never fixed the problem.
  • Sharan 2.0 2001 - Sharan Aircon problem 2 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Have been running the car for the past 300 miles or so with the air con switched off. Ran the engine yesterday to warm it up to change the oil and got some burning smell from the left side of the engine (where the pumps/ drivebelt are. Couldn't see any obvious fault when I inspected the aircon components from under the car. Any help to diagnose and repair would be appreciated.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.6 Which is heater hose for refilling coolant? 30 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I would like to learn how to do stuff like this, but don't find the haynes manual has enough detail for a novice. All I have done in the past is stuff like changing the oil filter and HT leads. The simple stuff really. Whilst i'm at it, what tools would i need to change the Cylinder head temp sensor? Apologies for asking a lot!
  • Mazda MPV (2000 - 2007) - 2003 2.0td - full service or not? 24 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I'm inclined towards getting the cam belt done shortly due to the catastrophic results if it fails but would it be sensible to just get a basic service/oil change done at this point? Cheers!
  • Ford S-MAX (2006 - ) - 2.0 tdci the definitive treatment 25 Oct 2007 (Forum)
There is advise on running in a diesel in the FAQ section, but we wondered whether somebody could give us the definitive on engine care. i.e. Should one avoid supermarket diesel, use any additive, frequency of oil/filter change and any other tips anybody might have? We live in the country and so most runs are 12 miles to town to ferry kids. This is the first new car we have ever had and have bought it for the long haul. we do wonder whether it was such a good idea to go for the diesel option.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 318 auto - what to look for? 16 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Hello all, I've been offered FiL's 318i auto, which I'm intending to buy as soon as he decides what he's changing it for. The car has full BMW service history, and has just had its Inspection 2 at 60,000 miles. I know from the CBCB that I should have the ATF changed on the auto box as BMW won't have done this, but what else should I look out for once I get it?
