Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 1999 1.8 Fuel consumption urban figure 22 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Does anyone know how the car was driven to give this value i.e. would it include high revving through the low gears and periods of idling, and would it include driving up hills. The thing is since I had an oil change I have been getting 2-4mpg less on urban driving. Do you think revving the engine whilst it is idling uses more petrol than holding onto low gears while driving and is the 27mpg only a guide ? -
Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 2000 1.8CD engine management fault 19 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I had a full service 8,000 miles ago and do approx. 20,000 miles per year. The garage is suggesting changing the oil? Any ideas? -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 2000 2.0 HDi - Coolant loss 13 Aug 2008 (Forum)
(Mind you, the car stands on gravel.) All the hoses I can see and/or touch seem dry, with no trace of residue. No trace of oil contamination. The car runs fine. Is this something I can pursue myself, or does it need some kind of pressure-testing, or other specialist equipment? As the cambelt (to our knowledge) has never been changed, are we looking at a possible coolant pump failure? -
Nissan Micra (2003 - 2010) - Servicing and service! 3 Aug 2008 (Forum)
How does one know whether all tests & checks have been carried out? - sometimes it seems a damn expensive oil change as one can never be sure all work carried out. Is this why a lot of people do their own servicing - or more likely find a garage to be trusted? -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1996 1.3 Please Help!!! Running on problem 4 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Hi all, I have a 1996 (N) Ford Fiesta 1.3EFi. The car was producing blue smoke and as a result someone I know replaced the Valve stem oil seals for me. Since this has been done the Fiesta has 2 new problems that I cannot solve - And he has since moved out of the area :-( . 1. It "runs on" when changing gear 2. It now produces white smoke when cold I have tried giving the car a long 20mile ish run to make sure the ECU is no longer in learing mode and I have adjusted the throttle cable to no avail. -
Volvo S40/V40 (1996 - 2004) - 1.9D Cambelt 6 Jan 2008 (Forum)
What's worrying me is that the car only has 61K miles on the clock, has always been maintained by Volvo dealer, has belt changed at 50K service, per Volvo recommendation. They've said that if it was a part failure, then we are covered by parts warranty, but have now said that an oil pump seized ! Convenient! Many cars don't drop valves, etc, when a belt goes & I'm trying to find out if this is the case with the V40? -
MPV's French/Italian or German? 28 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I'd be going diesel prob 2003/2004 model. The sharan has the PD engine which I like, although there is the issue of correct oil and low timing belt change interval. The French cars I know less about but seem to have the issue over emissions stuff and the Filter and fluid. The C8 etc have sliding doors which would be good. -
nissan serena sgx 2.0 petrol gearbox 17 Jun 2007 (Forum)
right, i've got a 1993 nissan serena sgx 2.0 petrol with a 5 speed manual gearbox. my problem may be 2 fold but i'm not sure. firstly i'm having trouble getting it into gear when the engine is first started. after about 10 minutes the gearbox is still very notchy but it does go in not sure if its a clutch or gearbox problem. the clutch does not slip at all but the clutch pedal is very low. we've replaced the slave cylinder and while it is/was slightly better the problem is still there, we've also checked the oil in the gearbox which is ok. the second problem is we've devloped a strange clunking sound, at first we thought shockers so we changed them. ball joints seem ok to. any ideas please. thanks -
Astra clutch trouble 17 Mar 2007 (Forum)
No crunching noise, just a pain in the backside. Any ideas? would a new clutch sort this, and as a temp fix would chaning the gearbox oil make any difference? cheers!! -
Some Citroens can be ultra reliable! 6 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Nothing too amazing about that as there are quite a few around that have done those sort of mega-mileages.......But.........its only ever been serviced four times! Thats an oil change every 60,000 miles, on a diesel. Brake pads and tyres are all its ever had. Its just passed its MOT with no problems. Superb! -
Rattely Fiesta - Should I be concerned 30 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I notice it most at the front passenger side of the car, over the engine block it doesn't sound that bad, just the usual pushrod fiesta tappety sound. I've booked the car in for a service and the mechanic reckons its just the oil that needs changing badly (but he hasn't heared the car). The engine drives fine and there is no knocking or thumping noises. Could this be the camshaft and if so is it a major job? -
Buying S/H in Italy 25 Jul 2006 (Forum)
The price seemed OK for the local market although the mileage was around 63000 miles. I presume the engine shouldn't be a problem for a long time to come assuming regular oil changes? Any comments on the likely longevity of this model or other things I ought to look out for? -
VW Golf TDi - Service Indicator 6 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Have any other Golf TDi owners had a similar experience with the on-board service indicator coming on after such a short interval between services? I am all for oil changes at 5-6,000 miles but am concerned that there may be something wrong with my car as the indicator has come on early. -
93 micra juddering when warm 24 Feb 2006 (Forum)

406 V6 coil (again) 24 Nov 2005 (Forum)
s only a ten minute job once the right faulty coil has been diagnosed, would I be able to do it myself in future if I carried a couple of spares? How involved is it? I can change brake pads, oil and put shelves up and I carry a basic tool kit. Can you tell a failed coil by looking at it? Am I being realistic? Cheers, Dave -
Mk1 Mondeo Idling Issues.. :( 26 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I have a 1.8L Petrol 1995 Mondeo LX. Its recently just had a new starter motor, plugs, oil filter etc. ( Its done 168,000 miles) It used to stall before I had the starter motor changed, but now it still does. It can sit at idle for some time, the idle speed will vary between 1200rpm and 950... and then all of a sudden it will drop off... the engine will try to recover, but then it will drop off and stall. -
Sluggish 95M Xantia 1.9TDi VSX 27 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Will barely accelerate at 70, doesn't go over 3,000rpm in lower gears without cutting out, smokes like a teenage mother. Car hasn't had an oil, oilfilter or airfilter change in 48,000 miles. I'm getting the owner onto this at the weekend. This may be part of the problem, but I fear things are a bit more serious than that. First thoughts are airflow meter (afm) or throttle potentiometer as I understand these are weak points on this engine. -
Polo. Diagnose drivetrain noise please 21 Dec 2004 (Forum)
okay i have a 88 vw polo, there been a noise that sounds just like a worn wheel bearing from n/s/front...the typical wurr wurr noise so i fitted a new bearing..old one looked servicable and the new one didnt improve things at all today i pulled back the cv boot...there was enough grease in there and every thing looked good...so i regreased it and put the boot back ive also recently changed the gearoil..no swarf in the old oil so guys...what now? this wurr wurr is noticable from walking speed up to 50-60 where the road/engine noise cover it,its worse when not straight ahead and at its quietest when accelerating( but that maybe engine noise drowning it out) -
Citroen ZX 1.9 Diesel 16 Nov 2004 (Forum)
The car runs fine and does not produce any black or grey smoke when accelerating. I have also noticed that the economy has dropped off a bit lately around the same time. I have changed the air filter, and the oil recently (the car is regularly serviced) as well as using some injector cleaner in the fuel, and this had no effect on either the economy or the smell. The car has done 79000 miles - and I am suspecting that it could be the injectors that soon will have to be replaced. -
Reviving a Fiat Punto.... 24 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I want to help but I'm not sure where I should start; The battery is going to be flat - should I recharge it or would it be less hassle to get a new one (£25-30)? What other things should I look at? - oil/filter/coolant change, brakes, tyres, spark plugs perhaps? Bear in mind that it just needs to be MOT'd and will be sold almost immediately afterwards Thanks in advance, Chad.
