The New BMW Service Thread 7 Jun 2005 (Forum)
ve just booked my BMW (316ES, on 53 plate) in for its first service. Done 15000 miles in its 18 months of life. The quote was £160 for what is essentially an oil change, which is on the expensive side when compared to Ford, Vauxhall etc, but not a made price. But I?m trapped into having it done by a beemer dealer so that I can keep the warranty and the resale value up. -
Vauxhall Corsa 96 1.4i engine fault lamp 30 Mar 2005 (Forum)
The fault light went away, but I experienced slightly jerky deceleration and cruising around 2k/rpm. New spark plugs, oil change, injector cleaner, the car improves, until this evening and the fault code 28 returns. Does anyone have any idea of what to look at next? Also, how does the ECU know if there is a problem with the contacts in the relay? -
Service at Vauxhall garage? 8 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Do I have to take it to a Vauxhall dealer or can I take it to a local garage that my friends recommend? I think it probably needs 2 new tyres, a new cambelt? (it's reached 40k), an oil change plus whatever else they do. Is there anything else I should ask for specifically on top of their normal service? Thanks, mustard. -
405 1.9TD - Lumpy Idle 3 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Had injectors re-tipped and changed oil and filters. It still doesn't want to start properly taking quite a bit of cranking and blumes of white smoke after it catches. Once its warmed up it runs fine and doesn't smoke. The only problem is a slightly lumpy idle which occurs after about a minute of sitting still. -

Cold Starts 8 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I'm no mechanic but recently have started doing my own services and just wonder whether there is anything simple I can do to increase my chances of getting to work on time. (p.s plugs, oil, all filters etc changed about 3000 miles ago) Grateful for any replies, Andy. -
New car - how to keep that way? 22 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Anyway, how do I keep it looking nice and new? What polishes, treatments and lotions does it need? Aside from the regular oil changes what tips do you have so I can try and keep the car looking as it does now? The only thing I have at the moment is an old bottle of "Mer" polish. Geeze, I don't even know where it came from! -
Daewoo Leganza tappet? noise 19 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Went back to the garage but was told they couldn't do anything about it and it would probably settle down! I've changed the oil to 10w-40 but this has not made any difference. The engine is a 2 litre D-Tech DOHC which I think was manufactured by GM Holden. Have read recent correspondance on a Vauxhall Omega which had the same symptons, but it turned out that it was a broken exhaust manifold stud. -
vectra 2.0dti 100k 21 Aug 2003 (Forum)
hello im in two minds, ive got the chance of a 2.0 dti vectra estate this time next year for 2-3000 of a relative there a few things that puts me off...... one is the 20000 mile oil changes, it will have done 100000 appx by then. surely that doesnt do a car any good. i know vauxhall will tell you otherwise but come on.. another thing is what do you reckon it will be worth its a 51 plate estate be worth in a year also the get absolutely slated on here. things like the computer reliability trim falling off etc ive got one and never had aproblem with it in anyway am i lucky should i buy it or run away as fast as i can?????? -

turbodiesels and fuel economy 20 May 2003 (Forum)
How good/bad are ford turbo diesels, scaning this web site seems to indicate poor mpg from fords? If you change the oil regularly, say , every 5000 miles on a modern turbo diesels, what engine life can you expect. Is 200,000 - 300,000 miles a reasonable expectation. I would appreciate some answers. Thanks. -
Auction Success 10 May 2003 (Forum)
I have just bought a 98 'R' Mazda 626 with 103k (warrantied) with air con, cl etc for the princely sum of £1650 at auction today. the car itself is filthy, so needs a good valet. I will also change the oil, filters and timing belt asap, but otherwise is a good car, with no sign of bodywork or paint jobs and no big scratches or scrapes. I have looked at all the guide prices (CAP, Glasses and Parkers) and all of them are above this price except for below average condition. -
Astra 1.7D Grey/Black smoke 17 Jan 2003 (Forum)
hi i have just bought the above vehicle and im a little concerened at the amount of grey/black smoke that comes from the exhaust on normal and hard acceleration. i have had the injector pump set up properly by a specialist and had an oil and filter change but it still seems to persist. The specialist suggested that i ran some injector cleaner through the fuel tank to clean possible deposits from the engine components but this hasnt worked either. -
Autobox Life 29 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Folks, I am considering a Citroen XM estate 2.1 Diesel auto to replace my Peugeot 405 GRD 1.9 which is in it's twilight years at 250K. As with many XM issues, opinions are polarised regarding the life of the box. With proper ATF changes and decent oil, what is: 1/ The life of a normal auto box on most cars? 2/ Ditto, but of the XM? Point 2/ is tricky, as the vast majority of XMs have been abused and ill-maintained. And then there are the ones -without- Citroen main dealer FSH... -
Noisy tappets on a Laguna? 2 Aug 2002 (Forum)
After taking it to various garages and even having the problem diagnosed as the cam lifters (which these were replaced), the problem still persists. I have changed the oil for some good quality Castrol GTX Magnatec 10/40w, it is slightly quieter, but they seem excessively noisy to me, compared to other Laguna's of the same engine I have heard. I know that this is not the best engine in the world, or the most powerful, but i'm sure it should be quiter than this? -
Turbo Diesel Cars- precautions 18 Jan 2002 (Forum)
I am told they may warm up more slowly than the equivalent sized petrol engine? Also I believe one should NOT change the oil in the engine until 1 year is up to ensure the wearing in of the mating surfaces, but thereafter every six months? Poor lubrication of fuel pump caused by bad fuel can give premature pump failure, should I avoid buying fuel from the same source to avoid this event? -

I use aircon all the time so should not have no use problems Thanks in anticipation. -
Short Journeys 16 Feb 2001 (Forum)
After all, mild steel will rust on exposure to water and salt. Car companies generally do respond to market needs; multi-grade oils and sealed for life bearings are good examples. -
Mazda 6 Diesel Sport 2L 2002 model - ENGINE STALLING THEN KNOCKING SOUND PLEASE HELP 17 Jan 2011 (Forum)
I stopped and attempted to restart but it just turned over. I looked at the dipstick and the oil was not registering on it, i could see none leaking from anywhere and the coolant level was fine with no signs of oil in it. I took off the oil filler cap and there was a small amount of white smoke coming from inside the engine. -
Vauxhall Zafira A - error codes - BDO or BDO2. 52 plate Zafira 29 Jul 2016 (Forum)
I brought the car when it was 6 months old but unfortunately I had an accident at work which has left me disabled hence the reason I don't use it much. Last time I had the oil changed the chap that did it brought a diagnostic scanner with him and reset the lights, this time I thought I'd buy a scanner and do the job myself. What I need to know is is my car OBD or OBD 2? I've lost his phone number so I can't ask him.
