  • VW Golf Estate or Skoda Octavia Estate - High Mileage 2 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Both have full service history and seemed to have been well looked after. How long will these cars last for? Is there problem with oil changes or things like that? My other question is does towing a caravan/horse put excessive strain on engines? The reason I ask is alot of these diesel estates have tow bars.   Many thanks for your replies.
  • Ford Fiesta 1388cc Zetec - Poor low speed running 25 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Jumped in my 1388cc zetec Fiesta today after it had been stood for 2 weeks and did a 6 mile round trip.It ran lumpy at low speed as if running on three cylinders or missing. No go in it until wound up to 60mph where it seemed smooth at that speed on neutral throttle.Back on my driveway it did tick over but revved up very poorly. It`s done approx 120k with oil&filter changed regularly, and cam belt at 100k....but not a lot else done within the last 40k for service to the engine.Don`t want to fork out for injection cleaner if it`s something I can tinker with for free.Any ideas please?

  • Main Dealer Stamps - How important? 9 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I am seriously considering taking my car to a local independent garage for my next service (2nd minor service) instead of taking it to a Ford garage. Ford charge £130 for an oil and filter change - rather steep if you ask me. goodness knows what they charge for a full major service. So, how important are the dealer stamps? How much does it reduce the value of the car?
  • Audi A4 (1995 - 2000) - 98 1.8 Hesitation under acceleration 9 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I have modified my driving to use the accelorator gently and it all seems ok, but if i need to overtake, wether i change down or not, the hesitation is most apparent. There are no noises, oil leaks, it is serviced regularily, no warning lights, no excess fuel usage, no black smoke. It has just sailed through the MOT and i asked the garage to put it on the diagnostic machine and no fault was found.

  • BMW 5-Series E60 (2003 - 2009) - 04 3.0 loss of power & smoking a bit from exhaust 16 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I have a 53plate 530d, and i have recently been getting a loss of power at high revs and cloud of black smoke. Driving normally i get no smoke, just when i put my foot down. I recently changed my air filter, which was black and had remnants of oil or soot? Any ideas?? i've been told it might be crank bearing pressure filter or fuel filter??? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks, Col
  • Renault Clio II (2001 - 2007) - First service costs 2 Aug 2009 (Forum)
My Clio is due its first service soon. Cost will be £180, for what basically amounts on an oil and filter change and a visual safety check of other components (yeah, right - just tick the boxes on the service sheet during the tea break). It seems most of the bigger manufacturers charge around this amount because they know the customer is tied to them otherwise the warranty will be void.
  • Hyundai Accent (2000 - 2006) - 00 1.5 ABS occasionally operates on light braking 3 May 2009 (Forum)
Stepson just got a tidy Accent GDX with 80,000 on the clock: took it to my trusted indie for an oil/filter/cambelt change, test driving it the ABS triggered with light braking. I had the same unexpected ABS operation a couple of days ago, no ABS warning light and the brakes work fine (plenty of pad and good discs) so it is a bit of a puzzle.
  • Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - Flooded (d'oh!) 10 Feb 2009 (Forum)
It's being dumped back here. Plan is to take out the glow plugs and try to turn the engine over and then change the oil. *Fingers crossed*
  • Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - 95 1.1 Starting fault 19 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Hi My daughter has a problem starting her ford fiesta after doing about 20 to 30 miles, after she turns the engine off, the car will not start again for about 30 minutes. Did a service on the vehicle and also renewed the oil filter cap which was broken, cleaned all the hoses to the air filter etc. Checked the alternator and battery which all working fine, had to change the fan belt. The car starts first time in the morning and runs well for a 13 year old motor with 73,000 miles on the clock, but got this intermittent fault not sure what?

  • Toyota Land Cruiser LC (2003 - 2009 ) - 2007 LC5 auto - Knocking /Clatter noise on startup 6 Mar 2008 (Forum)
The noise is similar to the" old tractor " noise". The noise does get quieter once the enging is warmed up, and I have just changed the oil to 5w30 and had new injectors fitted, but still the problem persists. Can any one throw some light on the subject as the Toyota garage in Spain does not seem to know how to solve the problem
  • Renault Megane (1999 - 2002) - 00 yr 1.4 - Tapping noise at low engine speeds. 14 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Recently a tapping noise can be heard from the engine. It is only noticeable during idling or travelling at low speeds. I recently got my oil changed on the back of some advice and now the tapping noise only starts one the engine gets up to temperature. It has been advised that it could be the timing belt tensioner, or the hydraulic tappets.
  • 2.2hdi running in or not 30 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I have read about letting it warm up and then simmer down, but how should this new engine be treated? when should I have the oil changed? should I take it on a 3000 mile round trip one week after getting it back? If so should I stop regularly or is it better to just let it run? Definately never want to go through another major failure on an HDi again.

  • Land Rover Discovery 15 Jan 2007 (Forum)
The old front tyres were on the legal limit and might have been masking any suspension/geometry fault but it did handle ( as well as a 4x4 can) Any other ideas as to what could cause this bad handling other than the tyres themselves? Could the fact that the front axle diff has not had its oil changed for a long time and the diff be causing this problem?
  • How can you tell ? 22 Jun 2006 (Forum)
My son got his imported 2nd hand Toyota Lucida yesterday. The dealer assured him they had changed the cambelt. They had shown him the old belt, (well, an old belt) but a suspicious person like me can't help wondering. The engine seems very clean, and has fresh oil, but should he have some documentation to say the job had been done ?
  • Help ! overheating Vectra 17 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Just renewed brake pipes ,front disks on my Vectra after an MOT failure to find it is now overheating. I had also renewed oil and all filters and was fine prior to taking the vehicle off the road for a few days. I took it for a run yesterday and it was overheating as a result of a binding front brake , the disks were in bad shape So I decided to change them today.
