  • Hyundai i20 - Engine noise. Is it all over for the car? 27 Mar 2025 (Forum)
I wasn't sure if it had always been there. I was about to do a long journey so drove ten miles to local garage, checked the oil which was low and topped it up.  Then I drove 200 miles home. It's not obviously loosing oil, no warning lights have come on, the volume doesn't really change I don't think.  There hasn't been any obvious loss of power.
  • Toyota Celica - Failed Emissions Test MOT 16 Apr 2018 (Forum)
However, there has always been an issue with the engine warning light coming on but no mechanic has been able to diagnose the issue. It has also drank a lot of oil too through-out my ownership. I'm told this is a frequent problem with Celica's.   I'm not sure what to do as the mechanics have said that it's burning oil and think it could be a valve issue or rings.
  • Toyota RAV4 D-4D - Blown Turbo again 2 Apr 2017 (Forum)
3 weeks ago the newish turbo blew after 7000 miles and said garage removed it and I returned it to BTN with a claim for a replacement. I have just received a report from BTN saying about what I expected, turbo failed due to 'oil dirt ingress'. Pictures of oily bits and scoring on shafts etc. Garage says it fitted the turbo correctly, changed oil and filter and I do trust them. In my opinion the damage seen on the photos could have been the result of the failure itself, if a bearing failed for example.
  • Mk1 Golf cam noise 7 Apr 2016 (Forum)
Anyone come across either problem on this engine and, more importantly, is there an inexpensive cure? One other thing - the oil pressure light takes about a second to go out from a cold start, and there's a noticeable rattle until it does so. I changed the oil and fitted a genuine VW filter, but no difference. It's so long since I last owned an early GTI that I can't remember whether this is normal behaviour for these engines - comments please.
  • 1.9 cdti with dpf - Dpf and/or engine experts please help 22 Sep 2015 (Forum)
Hi all Trying to find out whats wrong with my motor Using the car as taxi, lot of town driving , no motorway sometimes for weeks First the lack of powerat around 75k miles, felt like the turbo was held back, kept on driving anyway, two weeks later, big "exhaling" sound as it can be from an engine and just stopped. Towed, although when cooled could be started again. Into Vauxhall, changed manifold and dpf and they said I had a lot of excess oil. Genuine manifold, aftermarket dpf. Since then, when regening, huge blue smoke comes out and doing the process for way too long and sometimes too often and excessive oil builds up Could it be that some kind of seal gave in, when I was driving for too long without turbo and in the mean time the dpf clogged up, so maybe the pressure that built up for these reasons just led the weakest seal to break?
  • Skoda Fabia VRS OCT 10 - New engine needed, no warranty provided 30 Oct 2014 (Forum)
They changed the hoses as part of the skoda recall on these cars and told me to go back for oil to be weighed after a specific amount of miles. Fair enough. WhenI went back they advised me that it needed a new engine.
  • Vauxhall Corsa C - Blown head gasket 26 Jun 2014 (Forum)
I have the car under a third party warranty company, which came with the car from the dealership I bought it from. The initial quote I received from my local garage was around £100 for new spark plugs, oil filters etc, as warranty will cover the head gasket and all of the labour. They did not start the work as they needed to agree a price with the warranty company. After not hearing from the garage for 4 days, I phoned up, and now they are quoting me over a thousand pounds for a new water pump, timing belt, skimming, spark plugs, oil change etc, aswell as £200 for a 'pressure check'?!
  • Mercedes CLK 03 - Fuel contamination 19 Jun 2014 (Forum)
When he checked the fuel he found that it was oily and concluded that the fuel was contaminated. The oil hadn't come from the car (oil was fine) and the last place we had filled up was in a France. The fuel was drained (we have retained the fuel) and new petrol put in. The car was fine until we returned from a 2 hour trip (rarely use car other than for short journeys at weekends) when the same type of smoke came bellowing out again.
  • mk4 tdi 150 arl - what is this connection on my mk4 tdi 150? 2 Jul 2013 (Forum)
It struggles to go beyond 3000rpm when on the move, when it does, nothing really happens! I can't really see any leaks in the boost pipes, normally they would be dripping oil if there  was! my intercooler is probably the original but i dont want to spend the time/money changing it if its not the cause! my turbo does seem to spool by itself after short journeys, as if i was revving the engine when im not.

  • Peugeot 407 SW - Slipping Clutch?? 23 Feb 2013 (Forum)
This is a 2010 plate diesel with the 136bhp engine with 40K on the clock. About a year ago at 24K the clutch and DMF were changed under warranty. I had reported what I thought was slipping and they found oil contamination and excessive play in the DMF. A modified clutch was fitted but I don't know what that really means but they told me the 407 did have a slipping clutch problem that this is supposed to address.
  • mondeo 56 plate 2.0 tdci - tdci cold running and knocking like big ends gone 25 Sep 2010 (Forum)
my mondeo starts up in a morning no problem but runs a bit lumpy and has a slight misfire and sounds like a transit diesel with that knocking like the big ends are gone....once the car is warm the tickover is perfectly fine and no missing but the knocking is still there....i`ve just changed the oil and filter and put 10w-40 oil in it but it hasn`t quietened it down and it`s not affecting the performance of the car.i have replaced the thick pipe from the egr valve which had split and cleaned up the egr valve and cleaned the mass air flow sensor....when i take the vacuum pipe off the egr valve it makes no difference to the tickover is this normal?.......
  • Bmw x3 - DPF problems advice please 28 May 2010 (Forum)
Yesterday when driving home the engine warning light came on "amber". called the garage and booked it in. This is the second time its happened- the last in March. last time they changed a relay switch and a glow plug. On checking my oil last month it was right up to the maximum mark so my husband draining some out to reduce it to its normal level. From what i can gather and what i have read about the DPF on long, up to full temperature journeys the dpf regenerates itself. on shorter journeys it injects fuel into the engine to get hotter and that regenerates it. but it seems on mine the extra added fuel is just going into the engine and staying there.
  • Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 96 1.1 Running Rich 6 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I will probably have to give up this September when it is due again which is a shame as the engine is OK, it doesn't use oil and the oil stays relatively clean for 4000 between changes. It is however running rich as the sooty plugs will testify. Any ideas on dealing with this cheaply as I do not want to take it to a garage to have the ECU looked at or tested as it costs a mint and my car is worth about £200.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 1.8 Serious engine problems 21 Apr 2009 (Forum)
EML initially went out, now flashing/illuminated constantly, smoking heavily, temperature gauge permanently on cold; ? Oil clean, no signs of mayonnaise, heater and air con working correctly at all temperatures ? Spoke to previous owner (not seller), valve leak on cylinder 1 apparently diagnosed but no oil residue on plug; advised that plugs were apparently changed shortly before car was traded in.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2003 2.0 TDCi poor slow running 17 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Hi I have a mondeo 03 plate Since I have had it the injectors have been cleaned/changed, new glow plugs, new air, fuel and oil filter + new oil of correct consistency. Engine has now done 71000 miles. Also had air con and radiator fan on continuously. This was a faulty heater control panel.

very little to none smoke when driving along drives quite nice at speed but not sure if 80mph should be max speed for a turbo only just got the van and what i have been told is that a few things have been done recently.(i have receipts for parts changed...!) new injectors new timing belt and tensioner. new glow plugs new oil new oil filter new air filter i have been told that i should suspect two things 1. EGR valve 2. air flow meter. now what......?
  • BMW 3-Series E90 (2005 - ) - Why no temperature guages? 9 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Why are there neither water nor oil temperature gauges on the 3 series E90? In my neck of the woods a zero or sub zero start is the norm for up to five months of the year. In that period I try to make very gentle demands of a cold engine.
  • Peugeot - 306 d turbo starting problems 2 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I usually add this diesel starter spray i add in to the air intake at the front of the grill and it fires up, but a puff of white and blue smoke does burn from exhaust when it does start. i don't know what the problem is i have just done a full service on the car today as well changed the glow plugs oil air filter oil filter fuel filter as well. it just will not tick over at all if the car is cold. it does start later in the day without the spray being added but it does struggle to start usually takes 10secs. there also seems to be turbo lag on the car as well as well i have owned 2 other 306 d turbos and they seemed to be fine and pick up speed fine but this 1 has turbo lag and u really have to put the pedal to the metal to get it going, please help me guys thanks
