Laying up car for 6 months 20 Sep 2006 (Forum)
WIll hook the battery up to a trickle charger and leave the handbrake off so hopefully no battery and brake issues when it is to be used again. Should I change the oil (was done recently) and maybe run it once a week for 10 minutes to keep the engine going or is this doing more harm than good? -
vauxhall 1.7 dti servicing 18 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I bought vauxhall 1.7 dti envoy 03 reg with 66000 on clock i was told by main dealer it only needs servicing every 20000 miles and cam belt every 100000 but i was going to oil change it every 10000 inbetween but asking a local garage they told me i should get it serviced every 10000 and get cambelt chaned at 80000 i dont know what to do as i do a lot of miles (650 to1000 a week) and if i do the latter it will cost me a fortune. but if i service it as main dealer says will it be alright p.s 75% of my driving is motorway overnight -
Citroen 2.0 HDi - Any Good? 17 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Ive got a Citroen C5 2.0HDI and basically im wondering if they are a good long term prospect. I have owned it from new and get the oil changed every 6k miles. My questions is very simple; do these engines last well, or are they a load of short lived complicated rubbish? Opinions seem to vary wildly. I have seen statements to the effect that they are a very well designed, robust engine, easily capable of 200,000 miles. -
missing maintenance - Primera 15 Jan 2006 (Forum)
f=2&t=37990 I've recently viewed an example which seemed OK visibly and to drive, but on inspection, it had only had 6 services in 84k. Most oil changes were 12k apart instead of 9, but there was one occasion when the interval was 22k. The car wasn't obviously suffering from cam chain wear or smoking, and to its' benefit a couple of jobs including cv boots and exhaust mid-section had been taken care of. -
Mazda 626 noisy tappets 26 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Car has recently been making a constant ticking noise once warmed up. The local mechanic has said it was the tappets and used a two stage flushing kit and changed the oil - this usually works apparently. This has improved the performance of the car but the ticking noise remains. His next suggestion is to replace all of the valves/tappets but this would work out to be quite costly with there being 16 of them. -
Blue smoke on deceleration 18 Apr 2003 (Forum)
It seems to smoke on deceleration (blueish smoke) but these problems disappear when warm. It doesnt seem to have used much oil in the last 500 miles (the time i have had the car). Does anyone have any ideas as to what this may be? I have fitted new injectors and checked that there is no air in the fuel lines, changed the fuel and air filter. -
Warranty or a holiday? 3 Dec 2002 (Forum)
My Passat TDi exits VW's warranty in February 2003 so I'm wondering if I should shell out for another 2 or 3 years for an independent warranty. 3 years is £700 which goes a long way towards a holiday or covers quite a few repairs. The car's done 53K and runs like a dream (albeit a slightly PD noisy one!). I've had the oil changed every 5K. Am I likely to get some heavy-ish bills in the next 50K and if so can anyone recommend a decent warranty firm? Or should I chance it, keep it properly serviced and trust in VW's outstanding reliability and book my place in the sun? -

Honda civic 2011/8th gen - Honda 1.8 Lost motion spring fail destroyed engin 1 Sep 2019 (Forum)
The garage is concerned about why the spring failed, and given visible damage to other cam lobes is advising a new engine in case of low oil pressure. Although no oil lights ever came on and level was just below half way at the time of engine failure. Oil was changed 2 months ago with Honda filter and Shell Helix 0W-30. Has anyone seen this failure before? -
servicing by numbers-which is best? 3 Jan 2019 (Forum)
The old chestnut returns. In todays Telegraph Cars, HJ recommends that oil should be changed every 10K miles, presumably regardless of what type of miles i.e. town miles, motorway miles, urban miles. Personally I think there is a place for extended mileage service regimes. -
Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - a different angle on oil starvation 9 Apr 2009 (Forum)
The other day ive got one of these on a v and it sounded like a diesel,i changed the oil twice but it still sounded horrible to the point i turned a customer away last week and told her i had lost the keys i was so embarrased to sell it, anyway to the chase I found this link after an internet look for a problem similar (this is something i often do for car related problems) heres the link http://www.ilexa.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,20660.0.html So i then looked at my car and wo and behold the bolts are totally undone and ready to jump out into a cam. -
2002 VW Passat TDI Power Loss 7 Jun 2007 (Forum)
The garage are now at a loss to offer an explanation. I have been invited to bring the car back a 3rd time to have the oil and oil filter that was fitted during the service changed. They claim to be VW specialist and insist they only ever fit the correct PD oil recommended by VW, but wanted to eliminate the possibility of being delivered oil with the wrong viscosity, which apparently might affect the running of the turbo??? -
Ford Focus 2011 1.6 Petrol 150 psi Mk 3 Miles 52K - Clutch and Gearbox issue plus total Dispair 19 Jan 2017 (Forum)
Took car in for motorcraft service and mentioned when booking it in i had seen small amount of oil on my drive. Was called and advised that it was a faulty sump plug ,so obviously agreed for them to change this. -
Skoda Octavia II (2004 - ) - Both cars - first service. 14 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Anyway I rang round and was as always amazed by the variation in price quoted for what amounts to little more than an oil change. In the end I was quoted £99 (inc VAT) for the Octaiva. I then managed to get this down to £57 by taking my own oil (I got a cracking deal on Castrol SLX II longlife VW505/507 at Cost-co last year). -
Jaguar X-Type 2.0d 2004 182k miles - Annual Trip Report 2 Sep 2018 (Forum)
No mechanical problems whatsoever, car never missed a beat and remained comfortable throughout. Seems to have used no oil. (I may, of course, have unleahed a curse by posting this.) Will take it into my indy in next week or so for an oil change/check it over etc. Not bad for a car that WBAC offered me £145 for (less admin fee, less charge for dings). -
Mazda MPV 2.0 diesel - White/blue smoke on startup. 22 Feb 2015 (Forum)
Had this car since 2004 and done 40k of fairly easy mileage, with no major servicing just oil/filter changes in the last few years due to the low mileage (4-5k pa). A few weeks ago during the really cold weather the car suddenly started blowing out lots of white smoke at startup and for a few mins thereafter. -
C-Max - Engine Failure will follow 22 Jul 2013 (Forum)
Then in early June we had jerky gear change and engine warining light. The AA suggested usng the diesel cleaning fluid which solved the problem. We asked Ford to check it over anyway just to be sure and low and behold we are told the problem is complicated and after £400 of dianostics this week we were told they cannt find the origin of the problem They suggested an turbo change or new engine. This in inself is an unsatifactory response by FORD. -
Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - 03 1.4 Overheating - now problems 27 Jun 2009 (Forum)
t there before; no other symptoms or fault codes. I have changed the plugs to no avail, coil pack and leads changed last summer. Can anyone offer any insight here before I go wasting money replacing random parts? I?m looking for a cheapish fix if possible! -
Volkswagen Corrado (1989 - 1995) - 92 2.9 VR6 MoT CO emissions fail - any ideas? 22 Jan 2009 (Forum)
First question - should Lambda flutuate at a constant RPM that much? Second question - How do I fix it? The MOT tester was ex-VW and seemed to think a change of oil and filter would make a difference, otherwise who knows because theres so much that will imapct it, so he wasn't much use (last oil change 2k miles ago).
