• Rover 25 1.4 - Cam Carrier oil leak 10 Mar 2013 (Forum)
  My wifes car has an oil leak somewhere around the top right of the engine. It's rather dirty (there's no where near me that does steam cleaning - grr!), but I thought it was coming from the cam cover so I had that off and reassembled with Hermitite Red.

  I dont know when the last service was. i have checked the oil and thereis plenty in there. could there be too much oil ? i ahve also checked the air filter and there was some oil in there!!!   Everything in the car works perfectly, gears, electrics engine etc. but little power. Tested the electrics, no odd noises or anything else. I change the oil anually, and plugs every 3 years. One mechanic said he though the transmition waas faulty, in 'safe mode', keeping it from functioning normally, but another mechanic said this was unlikely as there was no warning light.

    How much for this lot, do you think? Here is the list:  - MOT (50 quid) - Oil + filter change - Spark plugs - Air filter - Coolant - Replace rear brake cylinder + replace brake fluid - Replace both front brake pads  Comes to £390 quid!

  The cars now done 48k and is 4 years old and I've still got the problem. The only thing that changed perhaps from supplied spec at the first service was the engine oil to 10w40. Any guesses with whats wrong with it? Thanks Carl

  I changed the oil & filter (nightmare getting the filter off) and now it will not start. It turns over fine but will not fire. I had started the car from cold the night before to put it in the garage, so it only moved a few yards.

  I have a 2002 corsa c 1.0 12V Z10Xe engine with 96000 on the clock.  Over the past six months the oil level has not dropped at all on the dipstick (touch wood), but i want to know if the piston rings are likely to start to fail soon due to the high mileage of the engine.  I usually rev upto about 3000rpm when changing gear and cruise in fifth at between 2500 and 3000 rpm, only going upto about 4000rpm on the rare occasions that i venture onto the motorway.

  The rattle seems to be coming from the front- there is nothing more major as the car has recently had an oil and filter change and no problems were detected then mechanically- which would suggest there must be a problem with a loose clamp or maybe the heatshield could be slightly loose. Is this a major job, or as most people at work suggest just a case of your local garage replacing a clip or giving the exhaust a good whack to put it back into place, and would this be expensive as the MOT is due in six weeks time?

  hi, i bought my polo yesterday but on the way home the engine started to rattle at idle. like a cylinder was out. so when i got home i did an oil change, new plugs leads, distro cap rotor arm and coil pack. the rattling has more or less gone but the engine is now making a tappety noise, so i have checked the compression on the cylinders and it all seems good, i have no idea what to do next, im quite good usually being an almost qualified engineer (student) any help would be greatly appreciated.

  We have a 1999 1.0 Micra and it has started rattling at first start of the day for about 3-5 seconds. I think that this is the timing chain and after it has gone quiet the car runs OK. It has had its oil changed twice a year (as per HJ recomendation) and it has done 44,000 miles. Question 1: In view of the car's age is it worth repairing? Question 2: If I leave it to rattle, about how long have I got before something catastrophic happens and the vehicle breaks-down for good?

  the car has only done 34000 miles but its difficult to get into 5th gear. 1 in 5 attemps. last owner (senior years)never used 5th. i have changed gear oil and put treatment in. no different. is the 5th gear which is bolted onto end of gearbox easy to work on and replace any worn parts or am i better getting another box. is there anything else i can try. gear linkage looks ok and sits in middle of gate ok. all other gears work fine.

  I had service and timing belt replaced 3 months ago, now my emissions light has come on permanently and running sluggishly. i have oil in the spark plugs. took to garage and have been advised that i need piston ring(s) replacing at a cost of £600 +. The car has only 49000 miles on the clock! am i being ripped off? can anyone help {subject header changed to give a brief description of question being asked}

  It is more expensive than a Passat service. Must be joking surely. I'd have thought £100 max for an oil change and safety inspection. Any suggestions to reduce the price and retain the warranty? We live in the Chesterfield area. (year & engine size added to subject line as per the ignored requests)

  i bought this passat in the summer with 134000miles on it a quick oil change and cambelt and away i go however its now on 140000 and the turbo has started to play up when i start driving all is ok, but when i accelerate from 4th -5th the turbo stoppes boosting and it goes along quit happly but no boost,if i stop turn it off and on again all is ok untill i start to accelerate hard again. there is no black smoke at anytime, is there anybody who can point me in the right direction thanks

  t pull all right, the engine revs up. but I can see the engine struggles to pull in the motorway and it consumes lot of petrol. I recently changes the Oil filter, Spark plugs, Air filter. can some body give me some advice please engine and year added again......

  What shocked me was the estimate from my usually good value local mechanic - £750ish plus VAT. Thats labour, parts, oil/filter change and have the head checked by specialist, possibly skimmed depending on the damage. Just seemed quite steep, even bearing in mind its not the easiest of engines to work on. Now I know its prob a slight over-estimate in order to make sure he covers himself, but still made me go rather pale.

  Well against the advice of friends and relatives I went out and bought one today, a lovely example in trophy blue on a 52 reg with FSH including cambelts changed, working air-con and no mayo in the oil cap! A nice half leather and suede interior and large spoiler to boot. Even after reading CBC breakdown I made sure that the engine cooling fans worked. I'm very happy (so far) so please backroomers have I made a bad chioce as everyone else i've spoke too seems to think.

  I was wondering if the mpg will increase with more miles and if theres anything that can be done to get the most out of his fuel like changing to fully synthetic oil etc? He does around 35,000 miles a year so it makes a big difference to the fuel bill. cheers

  We run an '06 VW which costs me £15 a month to cover all servicing costs and a W merc C class which gets a major service at a local non franchise garage every year and the odd oil change. This is about £500 and anything else that goes wrong is extra, this seems to be another £500 to £800 a year. {tyres, pads, exhausts etc. } I am quite happy with this but wonder what other folks consider reasonable for their yearly motoring costs.
