  • Peugeot 406 2.0 hdi 110. 52reg (208k) - 406 hdi loosing coolant 12 May 2010 (Forum)
About 3 weeks ago whilst taking the kids to school i noticed a ploom of white exhaust fumes coming from my 406 hdi, i got home and sure enough mayo in oil filler cap, head gasket!    The next day i cleaned the oil filler cap out, topped the coolant up with water and  it started fine, no white exhaust smoke. I drove it to the garage  who said it didn't seem like the head gasket had gone.
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 99 1.2 Engine sounds unhealthy chain? - video incl 10 May 2009 (Forum)
Bellboy will probably know the answer as he seems to sell a lot of Corsas. Oil was changed 280 miles ago. It is a high quality recording and through my HIFI seperates it sounds like the engine is running in my room. http://s167.photobucket.com/albums/u141/amazingtrade/?action=view¤t=05052009001.flv Thanks I just don't know if I should be worried or not.
  • 535 Headgasket & Block tester 13 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I have a '89 bmw 535. I noticed some condensation on the oil cap the other day, therefore I changed the oil and took the car for a run. At the end of 50 miles I open up the cap and the white milky substance is back again. On the test drive the temperature guage drops to zero then back up to the middle after 30 seconds.
  • VW Golf Mk3 VR6 - Head Gasket? 8 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I need some advice about some 'mayonaise' I found onthe oil filler cap. I check my oil quite regulary, and have never seen a white deposit before yesterday, also coolant level never needs topping up. Last time i checked was a few days ago - and found no mayonaise.
  • Failed Hydraulic Tappet ? (Polo) 1 Mar 2006 (Forum)
is why when the noise stops, it stops all of a sudden and not a gradual fade? I'm going to ask the garage for their opinion on Tuesday, (already had it booked in for an oil, oil filter and coolant change) but in the likely event of the noise continuing, I?m going to ask for a quote for repair. Am I right in thinking that it's a relatively straightforward job on this unit?
  • ZX 1.4 head gasket?? 29 Dec 2004 (Forum)
But I would have thought with a new thermostat (88 deg) that it should run cooler, especially when the ambient temp is only 3 degrees. The reason I am concerned about the head gasket is that while changing the coolant over Xmas I noticed some brown mayo/sludge in the header tank. I am usure whether this is oil deposits or just from the previous owner doing short didtances. Everything else seems fine, it runs smooth, pulls well, has no sign of water in oil, and water level stays constant.
  • Omega Automatic Transmission 18 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I've looked in the owner's manuall and, as I suspected, it states that there is a fault and to take the vehicleto a dealer. What I would like to know is : 1) any idea what the fault could be? Does it need a service? A change of auto oil? A top-up of auto oil? A (heaven forbid!) new gearbox? 2) What are the likely fees charged at the dealer for a diagnostic check? 3) Can anybody recommend a good dealer within reasonable distance to Cardiff?
  • The life & death of a 1.4 CVH Escort 6 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Drives and handles nice for a car of this age, it has done 100137 miles. The Engine is dirty due to the oil filler cap blowing off at start up (this happerns at when the engine is cold and has not been started for a few days) most likly due to the last oil change being five years ago!!!. The engine has a rattling noise which all cvh engines have mostly when you accelerate between 40-50 mph in fifth gear, in this car that noise is heard when you try to hold the speed at 50-60 mph in fouth or fifth gear and it is loud?
  • Baggy Corsas and FSH 9 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Now for all I know, the owner could have told the garage to ignore all the faults (including the dangerous ones) and just change the oil to get the stamp in the service book ready for sale. But this is the second car I have seen recently with immaculate bodywork and FSH, but which drove like a 300,000 mile ex minicab. It makes me wonder whether a full history is worth paying a premium for after all.
  • Audi a3 cabriolet - Audi a3 cabriolet..problems after problems 31 Jul 2015 (Forum)
She did this and still no reply from them despite repeated calls. She took car to Audi for free healthcheck, they picked up on oil leak on engine..turbo jet gone..cambelt not changed...brake fluid not changed..alignment out..tyre condition..fail..not looking good. Contacted finance and dealer to let them know..no one seems to be taking responsibility...she paid for full check from Audi as now worried what else could be wrong..and it cost another £150..they wouldn't let car go until oil leak fixed add another 30 quid...fair do to them that courtesy car was provided...my daughter has contacted dealers who have admitted they 'misinformed' her about cambelt change, but refuse to pay for work or approve it through warranty or finance company.
  • BMW 3 Series E36 - Increased Deceleration and a lack of Acceleration! 18 Dec 2012 (Forum)
Diff oil is sufficiently topped up. Gearbox oil is meant to be sealed for life but I think can see a weep from the filler plug and the box is covered in oil so I will try to change the oil as soon as possible.
  • Peugeot 2008 1.2 puretech 130 EAT6 Allure Premium - five year report 19 Oct 2024 (Forum)
It can actually do well over 50mpg on its rare motorway journeys so long as 70mph is not exceeded.  Some say Puretech engines burn oil excessively.  It’s done 8500 miles since my oil change in April 2023 and the level is now 17 mm below the 3.5 litre maximum mark. It takes 1 litre from min to max, a distance of 40mm on the dipstick.

  • Ford Fiesta 1997 - Ford Fiesta 1997 (Mazda 121) Revs Dropping 15 May 2010 (Forum)
When I step on the clutch to free for example, the revs gets stuck for a while at 2700rpm and then drops down (either fast or normal). I recently serviced the car, changed the HT leads, changed the oil as well as the Idle Air Control Valve because it was giving other problems (rev counter went to about 4000rpm when I stepped on the clutch and I had no power even though the revs climbed normally.
  • Ford KA, KA2, KA3 - Ford Ka really low MPG 22 Mar 2010 (Forum)
the last service was its 1st service at around 3800 miles in June 2009. Dirty injectors? oil change needed ...? Read somewhere that it could be because of the air filter, i know that this has never been changed.
  • Toyota Camry (1996 - 2002) - 97 3.0 V6 engine interference or non interference? 4 Feb 2008 (Forum)
It is a 4th generation model (1997-2001) and has a full Toyota service history (last service was a "B" and was carried out February 2007). It is due a minor service this year, which amounts to little more than an air, oil and filter change. According to the service book it is due a cambelt change at 90K miles. I have read that this engine (1MZ-FE) is a "non interference" design and I am therefore tempted to ignore the cambelt, as failure should not result in major engine damage.

  • '99 Vectra 2.0 DTI blown fuse, ECU? 3 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Hi, Problem came about last night after having the car MOT'd. The two Front indicator bulbs had to be changed due to lost colour (relevance follows). After the MOT, pulled out onto busy road, changed up into 2nd and the car died, no warning lights other than oil light came on. Popped back to garage, they came and had a look, turned out fuse blown in fuse / relay box behind battery. there are 2 large fuses in there, both were 30 amp, front one blown.
  • Servicing BMW 318i 30 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Need to know for ordering parts. (1998 was the changeoveer year) 2. It obviously needs at least an oil service, and I intend to do this myself. I've always used Castrol Magnatec on the old Merc, will this be ok or should I go for fully synthetic? 3. I also intend to change plugs and air filter, but should I also replace HT leads/dist cap/rotor arm as preventative maintenance?
