Do I ever need to replace the chain cam? 13 Dec 2013 (Ask HJ)
My 2008 Volkswagen Golf has a chain cam, which the dealer says will last the lifetime of the 1.6 engine. Is this true? -
Citroen C5 - Citroen C5 cat & anti-pollution warnings 3 Dec 2010 (Forum)
He's been experiencing issues on and off with anti-pollution warning, catalytic convertor warning, ESP light and a bit of kangaroo hopping and at times stalling. I think he's had low oil pressure warnings at time stoo. I changed the cat (actually it's most of the exhaust when you change the cat on one of these), lambda sensors and oil pressure sensor. The dealer changed his auxilliary fuse box and has checked the car on their diagnostics machine several times but seems unable to work it out. -
Peugeot 806 MPV (1995 - 2003) - 99 1.9td noisy on tickover, quieter when revved 1 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I have owned my 806 since 2002 with 34k and have serviced the car at least every 6 months and at most 1year keeping to beat the 10 k limit. I recently changed the oil and filter carried out a cam belt change and found the water pump was leaking. changed the belt. all done a few weeks ago. as my wife is the driver i only now recently noticed the engine is noisy than normal on tick over, the sound quietens as the car revs increase from tick over, lifting the bonnet the noise seems to come from the back of the engine. could this be the turbo? -
Seat Leon TDi Servicing 18 May 2007 (Forum)
I understand that the oil for the 2.0 PD TDi is specialist and costs a lot of money, but I don't want to pay over the odds for what I suspect will amount to the most expensive lubricant change I've ever had to pay for. One afterthought: does anybody know when the cambelt / tensioners need changing on this VAG diesel engine? -
Renault 21 Savanna emission problems 20 Mar 2007 (Forum)
The bit that I cannot sort out and which is driving me crazy are the CO emissions, they are at around 12% and no matter what I adjust or do, it does not go below this. To date I have; Changed the air filter, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor arm. In the last 9-10 months, I have changed all the HT leads and performed an oil filter and oil change. The mixture has been weakened as much as is physically possible but the problem persists. -
Eternal vigilance 17 Aug 2003 (Forum)
As I've sung the praises of a certain High Street tyre fitter for changing oil, I'd better report what happened today. Prompted by HJ in today's Telegraph reminding us to change synth 1000 miles after changing from non-synth, I went into the cheapest source of Mobil 1. With manager's permission, I went along to the fitting bay to have a look, and am glad that I did. -
Galaxy 'design fault' - official 13 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I refer to my article - 'galaxy - notchy gearbox', July2002 I have now had it confirmed by a Ford main dealer that several people have commented on a 'crunch' on 1st to 2nd gear change when cold on their 6 speed VW gear box. Apparently it is to do with the lack of oil being sloshed around in the box until 'higher' revs have ben achieved for a mile or so thus reaching all parts of the gear box; ie after a couple of miles when the oil has circulated everything is fine. -
Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - 04 1.4 TDCi Engine Swap 9 Jul 2023 (Forum)
Unfortunately this time it is me who needs help. My wifes Fiesta came home last week (still running) with oil spraying on the windscreen upon further investigation the small pipe from the bottom of the expansion tank had blown off because the tank was also full of oil. After stripping it down I found oil in the radiator, heat exchanger, and all the water pipes and waterways on the engine. -
07 Mazda 6 2.0 TS Diesel - Loss of Power: 2007 Mazda 6 2.0 TS Diesel 8 Dec 2013 (Forum)
I can drop it to 4th/5th gear and drive at 50-60mph to get home. It first happened a week before a service/MOT. They did a static DPF regeneration and oil/filter change. Oil levels weren't excessively high (below "F"), and I've always had the low ash oil put in. This didn't cure it. "Current" fuel consumption readings as I drive are good suggesting that the DPF isn't trying to regenerate as I'm driving. -
Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi 2007 - Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi turbo going? What to do? 16 Aug 2013 (Forum)
As soon as it happened, I Googled the problem and was confronted with the depressing litany of turbo problems this particular engine has. I had the oil changed, but this has not fixed it. Generally, the car has been serviced at the recommended intervals and the correct oil used, although I now realise changing the oil every 6k would have been advisable. -

vw golf mk4 gt tdi 150 6 speed 2003 - low oil capacity, engine code, remapping 2 Feb 2013 (Forum)
hi all, i recently bought the above car, it has 166k but had a new engine, clutch and DMF at 105k. I have changed the oil last week for a vw specific 5w30, only around 2.5 litres fell out (still quite clean), while filling with 2.5 litres shows as slightly over on the dipstick. I have had conflicting ideas of how much these should take, it is on a 03 plate. -
VW Polo 1.4 petrol - New VW Polo, new engine after only 4000 miles 12 Sep 2010 (Forum)
--StartFragment--> Hello, I am new here and I am after some advice. After finding a few spots of oil on my drive and some oil spray in the engine bay I booked in my new model VW Polo 1.4 petrol into the dealer last Friday with what I thought was a small oil leak. Yesterday they told me the news that it requires a new engine. -
Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - (55 plate, 2.0 GT TDI) crunchy gearchanges 21 Mar 2008 (Forum)
After the car is warm, the gear changes couldn't be smoother, it's just the first two or three changes from 1st to 2nd on any given journey. I have heard stories of '2nd gear crunch' being an issue on a lot of VAG cars past and present. -
