  • The new Duster - 1.5 DCi okay for 10k miles per year? 2 Jul 2012 (Ask HJ)
I'm very tempted by the new Duster (I saw one in Renault Cardiff yesterday). I don't really do enough miles to warrant a diesel, but I would want the highest...
  • Mazda 6 Diesel 2008 - Mazda 6 Diesel computer glitch or serious problem? 25 Sep 2011 (Forum)
Anyway, after 1 week and driving it 320 miles everything seems fine.  The first weekend take it home for 120miles and on the motorway the DPF light comes on.  I run it for the weekend hoping that i can regenerate it. Phoned the garage to let them know on the Monday that there was a DPF issue.  Obviously i'm not going to drive it 320 mile back to the garage so opt for the local Mazda dealer.

  • Looking for older joyful car 21 Mar 2023 (Forum)
And the joy was gone..I need powerful (cheap, not on finance) car, that will have a quick reaction, fast pull, strong uphill, spacious boot. I was looking for above 2008 Mondeo td, but, reading about dpf, and only averaging 15-20 miles per day (city, bypass mostly), it's probably not a good idea. But there must be something better than my current focus..Here I am looking for make and model suggestion (year 2007 and Up), under £4000 (preferably way under ??).
  • Tow car for 8k budget. Diesel or petrol? 24 Jul 2022 (Forum)
I will use if for towing, weekly 30 odd mile drive and the occasional long motorway run. The mpg of a diesel is appealing but everything i look at people warm me off for DPF, EGR, etc. issues. I was looking diesel versions of Subaru Outback, Rav4, Avensis, CRV, V70 2.0. These all have about 80k miles for around 8k. Am i asking for trouble? Should i just get petrol and stomach the bad mpg in the hope of good reliability?
  • Vauxhall Vivaro - Loss of power 3 Mar 2022 (Forum)
I also had check Anti Pollution System filter flash up on screen, took to my usual garage and was checked and cleared from dashboard but today was the worst! Reading various reports I don't know whether it's the MAF filter, injectors, DPF or Turbo? Has anyone encountered this? If so would appreciate some tips or go to areas to help fix. My Taxi has 186k on the clock and has ALWAYS had a major service every 10k regardless and always maintained regularly.
  • Secondhand Jaguar XE vs New 2021 Dacia Sandero - Luxury Secondhand vs New Small Car 9 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Also considering a Secondhand Mondeo for same price but don’t know what engine to consider as I am also worried about DPF filters. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
  • Suzuki SX4 2013 1.6 Petrol, 35,000 miles any good? 15 Dec 2018 (Forum)
Mainly as the price difference is quite noticeable and as I do the majority of short town runs it won't have the EGR/DPF troubles of the newer diesels.  My mileage is dropping to around 16 - 17k per annum so I feel that now would be the time to return to petrol power.  Any potential savings on fuel would be offset by the servicing as I believe the intervals on the SX4 are around 10k.
  • Maybe a CR-V - £5k Diesel Dilemma 28 May 2018 (Forum)
I seem to read a lot on the subject that, when you drill down, appear to be talking about newer cars fitted with a DPF (I had to look that up) so I haven't been able to make a positively direct correlation. It probably does, but for a thickky like me it would be good to have it spelled out. My frustration is that my wife & I like high sitting positions of SUVs & MPVs, and in our searches found that we quite like the Honda CRV.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - Focus 1.6,1.8,2.0 MPG 9 May 2017 (Forum)
I'm looking to buy a 2006-ish Focus petrol (had enough of diesel DMFs,EGRs,DPFs etc!) and assumed the 1.6 would be the most economical. However a few forum searchs show many people are disappointed with their 1.6 economy - never reaching the 40mpg figure. I know these figures are a guideline but has anyone had any experience of the economy of the 1.8/2.0 petrol engine?
  • Buying a used Audi Q5 - what should I look out for? 11 Mar 2016 (Ask HJ)

  • Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi - Does the 08-11 suffer the turbo problems of 04-07 5 May 2015 (Forum)
HJ's reviews don't mention turbo problems on the 2008-2011 1.6 TDCi facelift model but I am trying to check if there have been problems with those model years as I understand Ford improved the oil supply pipes for 2008+ model year I would buy a 90bhp model hopefully without the DPF if the turbo gets a clean bill of health. thanks!
