I have been given a set of spark plugs for my old 405. Powerplugs (www.lectro.com). They suggest improvements in fuel economy of "up to 20%" and "15%...
  • 75000 mile Type-S, what needs doing? 7 Nov 2003 (Forum)
(Revs out to 8000rpm without missing a beat.) It's been well looked after and the guy who's had it for the last two years has changed the oil every six months himself (using top quality fully synth oil), he's put new plugs in (the platinum tipped ones), and generally kept a close eye on it. However, there must be a few things that it'd be worth doing on a car that's done this mileage.

  • Blown Turbo - Opinions please 3 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Incidentally a number of sensors were replaced during the repair, resolving an un-diagnosed fault I had complained about from new. Have racked up another 30,000 since, car does not loose oil or behave any way strangely. Any obvious things I should be keeping an eye on as I don't intend to change this motor for a good few years yet. Leon
  • Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 1995 1.9 TD Smoky start 5 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Starting after that point is also fine. The car has done 190 miles on just under 1/2 a tank which I'm assuming is on the low side. The oil is black and a change is next on my list of chores. It doesn't appear to burn oil though when it starts from cold a great cloud of smoke (I'd say blue smoke) is thrown out until engine settles. Can't see any sign of head gasket failure (no gunk on oil filler cap).
  • Peugeot Conrod Failure. New Engine fit 5 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I've only had the car a year, it had 72000 on the clock when i bought it, and had allegedly been off the road for 8 months before hand. I immediately changed the cambelt, and oil, and have done a couple of oil changes in our 14000 miles together, most of them being motorway miles. Then one day in March, after a gentle poodle down the motorway, i pull away from the end of the slip rod, and pop, away she went.
  • KIA Picanto (2004 - ) - Running fault turning into a duff engine. 17 Apr 2009 (Forum)
The oil has not been changed. 5. The sump plug was loose!!! that's how he noticed the oil was old as it was all over the bottom of the sump. 6. Spark plugs are worn, look like they have done 12000 miles not 2000. 7.
  • Meriva A CDTi 1,7 diesel - spanner light fixed it 30 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Had checked lots of info on youtube and internet but never found a cure. Was advised problem could be the immobilisor, so I changed car key battery, no change. Was advised it was linked to INSP note on the mileometer, which I reset but no change. Bought a cheap code reader but no joy, Took it to Vauxhall, no joy Saw a video which advised changing EGR valve on a 1,7 engine in a Corsa, no joy I change my oil and filters every 8000 miles and add cleaners to the diesel Have recently had cambelt changed at 75000   Car is an 08 on 77,000 miles.
  • Honda Civic - Garage advice 13 Oct 2016 (Forum)
Hi, ive had some annoying problems with my car recently and am looking for some advice about what to do about it.Three months ago my car(civic) started leaking oil badly so I took it to a garage and they said it is leaking from the camcover gasket, front main crank seal and had contaminated the cam belt and that the belt would need replacing. They said nothing about the water pump at this stage at all nor was there any mention of it being changed in the invoice. The garage replaced those oil seals and the cambelt and all was fine for a while. Two months later the car starting leaking antifreeze and started making a squeaking noise at the same time from around the water pump area, but this time I took it to another garage for an opinion.I did this because the first garage was very rude and not the best to deal with.
  • Nissan Almera Tino - Smokey car problems 18 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Had a warning light come on which we got checked and it said the rear Oxygen sensor wasn't working, got this changed car seemed to run better but still some smoke. Car has always used oil, not loads but enough that we would check it regularly, in the last month this has got worse.
  • Renault Scenic 1.5 Turbo Diesel - Renault Scenic Turbo Failure 15 Sep 2010 (Forum)
The main points we were told to watch out for in fitting the turbo were: 1. Make sure there is a good oil supply to the turbo. 2 Refill with new oil of the approved type. 3 Stop the turbo from spinning to check oil supply is OK before allowing it to spin. All these things were done correctly and the vehicle ran perfectly for over 3,500 miles.
  • Anyone had a Ford Value service? 3 Feb 2010 (Forum)
See here for details - http://tinyurl.com/7k5pe9 As the list below shows, they do a full range of checks, but looks like anything (maybe incl oil change) will cost extra. Anyone ever had one of these? Selective quotes from the above pages: Is your Ford over three years old? If so, it qualifies for a £99 Ford Value Service ? a cheaper alternative to a full service, designed especially for older vehicles. 1.
  • Random starting problems with MK3 Fiesta 10 Aug 2007 (Forum)
A few weeks later the oil warning light came on so I decided to switch from 15/30 to 15/40 as I got sick of the blue smoke and this actually cured it, it still burns oil but nothing like as much and there is no smoke at all now.
  • Astra running rough (longish) 28 Jul 2003 (Forum)
ECU light stopped coming on, but still tappy injector & rough running, now getting more noticable even from cold. 'Chuffing' noise noticable when listening to engine running with oil filler cap removed, allegedly sign of block crankcase breather, possibly due to over-oiling, but oil level certainly ok now & I can't find any crankcase hoses to check for blockages etc. Rough running seems to be getting worse, but: Not majorly down on pulling power/compression (just a bit unenthusiastic), Spark Plugs replaced at 80k service Fuel & air filters replaced at 80k No noticable increase in fuel consumption No noticable oil or water consumption The above rules out various obvious things, I think.
  • Fiat 500 sport - Engine Misfire 30 Sep 2016 (Forum)

But still i've got this mis firs problem which causes the ecu light to come on and the error is misfire cylinder 2.
  • Ford 2.2 diesel - service intervals 30 Dec 2014 (Forum)
It is an old model and is between 1 and 2 years old although only done delivery miles. What would you recommend the servicing to be. Firstly, would you have the engine oil changed before delivery and secondly, based on using the motorhome for  around 6000 miles per year. Should I have a service done annually or before each major trip?. Regards, Mike

Having recently driven a Ford with a lovely gearchange I am wondering first is the Merc faulty or is this a common feature? Secondly it seems like a good idea to change the gearoil in which case has anyone had good results and which oil did youuse? Finally with the rear drive is there any linkage to lubricate or is the stick straight into the gearbox? Thanks in advance for any advice.
