Volvo XC40 T3 Momentum 2018 Road Test

The Volvo XC40 T3 Momentum 2WD manual is the cheapest XC40. We wanted to find out how it compares to the most expensive XC40 T5 Inscription 4WD automatic tested here. And, of course, to other SUVs in the £25,000 - £30,000 price bracket.

As with all XC40s there are three drive modes: Comfort, Dynamic and Economy. In Comfort, the steering feels very light, but not unpleasantly so and you don’t feel completely divorced from the road. The 3-cylinder 156HP engine is quiet and the 6-speed gearshift is both light and positive to use. It’s very pleasant to drive. The surprise is the amount of torque: 265Nm from 1,850rpm and a good slug of that from 1,500rpm, which makes the car feel very eager. Accelerate hard uphill and the lack of noise turns into a characteristic 3-cylinder ‘thrum’, but it’s never intrusive. Switch to Dynamic mode and the steering weights up very nicely, inspiring more confidence in the T3’s cornering ability which, on the test car’s 235/50 R19 Continental Eco Contact tyres was very good; just not quite as good as the T5 with 4WD e3specially in adverse weather conditions. There was snow on the A68 at Tow Law.

Lack of 4WD and all that torque could also provoke a bit of wheelspin on a crumbling road surface. Ride comfort was excellent.

Volvo XC40 T3 2018 Satnav Screen

The standard Momentum spec is quite good (see the specs section) and you get excellent vertical satnav, with directions repeated on a TFT screen between the speedo and rev vounter.

The touch screen soon becomes intuitive with swipe menus for infotainment and the various systems fitted. (The first of them to get deleted was the intrusive lane keeping assist.)

Volvo XC40 T3 2018 Cockpit

The car on test was a ‘Momentun Pro’, so, for an extra £1,550 it had heated front seats, heated washer nozzles, active bending headlights, power driver seat with memory for seat and door mirrors, front seat cushion extensions, headlight cleaning system, heated windscreen, front LED foglights with Cornering Function, autofolding door mirrors. It’s worth having for the heated screen alone that cleared a layer of frost in less than a minute and you can get that for £500 together with heated seats, heated washer nozzles and the headlight cleaning system.

Volvo XC40 T23 2018 Glass Roof

The Xenium Pack of Power glass tilt and slide panoramic sunroof with sun curtain, 360 degree surround view parking camera, automatic parallel and 90 degree Park Assist comes in at £1,600. If you don’t want the sunroof, but do want the useful 360 degree parking camera that’s £700 alone.

I don’t think I’d spend £1,500 on Intellisafe Pro consisting of Pilot Assist (up to 80mph), adaptive cruise control, Blind Spot Information system, Cross traffic alert with Autobrake, Rear collision mitigation, Autofolding door mirrors, Autodimming door rear view mirrors. The adaptive cruise control did work quite well but standard cruise is standard on XC40s so that would do for me.

Volvo XC40 T3 2018 Load Divider 2

For £350 the Convenience Pack of Power Folding rear seat backrests and headrests, 12v socket in load area, Flexible load floor with grocery bag holder, driver side under seat storage, load protection net is worth having.

The Ice Pack of white roof, white 19-inch alloy wheels and white mirror pods is £700 thrown away on top of paying £575 for metallic paint. To my eye the car looks its best in plain metallic grey.

And, of course, I’d want the Tempa space saver spare wheel at £150.

So ‘my’ Volvo XC40 T3 Momentum would add up to £29,885, just £15 shy of £30k.

Volvo XC40 T3 2018 41.6mpg

Though the dash display was reading 41.6mpg after a horrendous 7 hour 300 mile journey involving the M1, brim-to-brim over 628 miles only came to 36.07mpg, only 1mpg better than I got from the 250HP T5 4WD auto.

However, the fact that I arrived back calm and pain-free after that appalling journey says a lot for the entry level Volvo XC40. No SUV for less than £30,000 beats it.

Those 2018 European Car of the Year judges were spot on.
