Peugeot is very keen to impress on the press that the 407 is a working car. 70% of 407s will sell to fleets. 75% will be diesels. The company knows a 407 can never meet aspirations fulfilled by a 3 Series or a C Class. It’s a business tool, up against Mondeos, Lagunas and Vectras.

And cars as business tools stand or fall on what they can offer the 40,000 mile a year man.

That’s worth thinking about for a moment. At an average speed of say 50mph, 40,000 miles means 800 hours behind the wheel, which is more than thirty-three 24 hour days and almost a tenth of a whole year. So a business car has to do a lot more than simply convey its driver from place to place. It also has to be his communications centre from which he can do deals, arrange appointments and, on Britain’s crowded roads, phone ahead to apologise he’s going to be late.

Whether you go for the small black and white screen satnav, or the full colour screen version, what you get with it is an integrated phone. Slip a SIM card into the dash, programme the system and its voice activation allows you to take or make calls on the move, or even have your text messages read out aloud to you by a synthesised voice (when The News of the World isn’t listening). And that makes a huge difference to what would otherwise be down-time wasted in the car.

My old Peugeot 407 has failed its MoT, should I pay £2000 to have it repaired?

"I have a 16-year old Peugeot 407 which has just failed its MOT, mainly because of all the electronic problems causing alarms showing about ABS, the speedometer not working, and other things. Will it be worth fixing, as it is likely to be around £2000 to get it fixed?"
This is a common problem when running an older car, in that eventually the cost of keeping it on the road ends up being a large proportion of the car's actual value, or possibly in this case more than the car is actually worth. If you want to keep the car long-term and are happy to spend the money to have it repaired then there is nothing necessarily wrong with this option, but it is worth bearing in mind that you are likely to continue to experience problems as the car ages, and keeping it in working condition will continue to cost significant sums of money. You may wish to consider what you can buy as a replacement for £2000, plus any money you can recoup from selling the Peugeot.

My diesel won't start in the morning - what's wrong?

"My Peugeot 407 2.0 HDi won't start in the mornings. If I roll it down a hill it will start and it starts any time when warm. Any ideas?"
Failed glowplugs. It's a compression ignition engine which is why rolling downhill starts it and it starts when warm. But needs the glowplugs to glow to start on a level surface from cold.

Why does my Peugeot 407 run rough every 450 miles?

"I recently bought a Peugeot 407 HDi and every 450 miles the engine runs rough for 10 miles/minutes, i.e will not maintain constant revs when cruising. When it's stopped black smoke comes out. After placing it in neutral/park it then runs smooth. This all ends after 10 minutes and it is great for the next 450 miles. Can this be something to do with the DPF cycle? No warnings are displayed."
It will be actively regenerating its diesel particulate filter, which involves injecting extra fuel into the engine. But it probably also has PSA's Eolys additive system and if it's run out of Eolys it will run rough during the regeneration. You need to get that checked. Unfortunately, unlike AdBlue, adding Eolys to a Peugeot is not a nice DIY job.

Peugeot 407 auto stuck in third gear

"My Peugeot 407 (automatic) is stuck in third gear. When I move the gearshift from drive to manual the display refuses to show which gear I'm in. Any idea what's wrong? "
