Peugeot 4007 (2007 – 2012) Review

Peugeot 4007 (2007 – 2012) At A Glance

4/5

+Terrific 2.2 diesel engine, excellent handling and decent off-road ability. Well equipped.

-It's strictly a 5+2 because the rearmost seats are for small children only. Crankshaft oil seal failures are leading to slipping clutches.

Insurance Groups are between 27–28
On average it achieves 85% of the official MPG figure

Like the Mitsubishi Outlander of which it and the Citroen C-Crosser are really mildly repannelled clones, it's good to drive and conveys a satisfying impression of Japanese build quality.

Do I have any recourse against Jaguar Land Rover for the EGR failure in my 2013 Evoque?

"My 2013 Range Rover Evoque was in for a service a month ago. During the service they reported that there was a coolant leak. This was confirmed to be coming from the EGR cooler and this will require both the EGR and cooler replacing at a cost of £925. I have researched the issue on the internet and note that a significant number of JLR customers have reported issues across the range with EGR failures. I wrote to JLR to complain that this was a widespread issue and was surprised that this was not being covered on a recall. They have eventually responded and after going back and forth they have offered a gesture of goodwill of 50 per cent towards the cost as my vehicle was four years old and now out of warranty. My response was that this was a fault in manufacture and I shouldn't be having to pay for something that is clearly not a one off fail. They said they would review it again but have just come back with the same offer. A concern is that I could be looking at a similar bill in a few years time when the new parts fail again. Do I have any other course of action?"
This is a PSA/Ford engine, not a JLR engine, and I have not seen a massive number of other complaints over other vehicles fitted with it. One previous report in the Evoque suggests that the problem may be the way it is installed in the car: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/land-rover/range-rover-evoque-2011/?section=good/ Only one report of an EGR failure in the Freelander II with the same engine: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/land-rover/freelander-2-2006/?section=good/ None reported in Discovery Sport, Outlander, 4007 or C Crosser with the same engine.

Buying used 4007 - should DPF put us off?

"We are considering buying a used Peugeot 4007 2.2 HDi 156 SE 5dr - 74,500 miles, 07 plate, full Peugeot service history, local car. Recently serviced, has a few extras - parking sensors and leather, and price at local Peugeot Dealer seems reasonable at £8000. From reading up it would seem DPF problems (including problems with the liquid catalyst these engines use) are reasonably common. That said these PSA engines and DPF systems are in many cars, and the only way it would seem to minimise the risk is to buy a newer car in warranty at considerably greater expense! Should we let the DPF horror stories put us off? We live rurally and don't do many short journeys."
The DPF problems seem to largely stem from damage to the Eolys tank that provides the catalyst in the fuel to promote regeneration. So you need to inspect that area carefully: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/peugeot/4007-2007/

Which dog-friendly SUV would you recommend to replace our Toyota RAV4?

"We need to consider changing our 6-year old RAV4 before too long and need advice on which models are worth considering. It must be 4WD. We are also looking for good fuel economy, reasonable tax band, reasonably priced services, a long warranty and above all a "dog friendly" boot. We have a budget of up to £25,000. We would not consider a Nissan or Land Rover, but any other suggestions of what we should look at would be extremely helpful."
The side opening rear door and comparatively low floor of a RAV4 makes it more dog friendly than the rest. The 2.0i Valvematic petrol engine with Multidrive S CVT automatic transmission is actually lower CO2 and more economical then the diesel auto, and it has a 5-year warranty. I recently got 45mpg from a Mitsubishi Outlander 2.2 diesel 4WD. Citroen C Crossers and Peugeot 4007s are the same vehicles. Another possibility is a Honda CR-V 2.2iDTEC.

What do you think of the Evoque Cross-Coupe Range Rover? Is it worth the money?

"I was just wondering what your thoughts are on the Evoque Cross-Coupe Range Rover five-door version. Also at £35,000, and being slightly smaller than the Freelander, is it worth the money? Or is there something similar you would recommend for 2012?"
I’ve yet to drive an Evoque, and I’d be wary of any description of it as a ‘fuel-efficient 4x4’. The most fuel efficient version is 2x4. Meanwhile, my money's on the new F25 BMW X3 4WD. It's excellent. Decent economy, decent performance, decent handling and decent size. Definitely top of the class. Test and video here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/bmw/bmw-x3-f25 And don’t forget the Mitsubishi Outlander/Citroen C Crosser/ Peugeot 4007, all of which share the Evoque’s engine and can give 45mpg.
