MINI Road Tests

It might still have two ‘barn’ doors for accessing the boot, but that’s about the only thing the new MINI Clubman has in common with its predecessor.

The new estate version of the latest MINI ever gets four-wheel drive and an eye-watering price tag. Is it worth it?

The R55 MINI Clubman is BMW's response to requests from MINI fans for MINI vans, with a bit more room in the back for carrying sports equipment, several people's luggage or more than a lampshade back from IKEA.

First a lesson in MINI product codes, just so we’re all clear about this. The first BMW MINI was coded R50, followed by the R52 convertible, while the Cooper S was designated R53. The second generation MINI hatchback is the R56. The Clubman version is the R55. And the new convertible is the R57.

The third-generation MINI Hatch is designed to be bigger and better than ever before. We give the Cooper D the full road test treatment to see just how good it is.

Whatever was wrong with the MINI Cooper S we tested back in October, now they seem to have fixed it. The MINI Cooper Diesel I’ve just handed back was exactly how I think a MINI should be.

The most obvious change in the MINI Cooper 2018 refresh is the lighting. New LED front indicators completely encircle the headlights making the driver’s intentions blindingly obvious. While, to fly the flag, at the rear a Union Jack effect is etched into the stoplights. This is fair enough because BMW actually builds up to 1,000 MINIs a day at Oxford, employing 4,500 people and exporting 80% of the cars. Last year’s total production was 223,817, which is about 15% of the UK’s total production of cars.

I thought I was the last bloke in the country to get my hands on the new R50 MINI Cooper. Until I drove one to the auctions and half the traders wanted a go.

The MINI Cooper S enters its third generation since BMW became the custodian of the brand - and this one is packed with more technology than ever before. But is it still a MINI?

MINI Convertible gets a new engine and transmission, plus more advanced tech for 2018.

When I tested an R50 MINI Cooper back in 2002 I reckoned it was the most fun car there was. Not the fastest by a long way. It didn’t need to be. The combination of size, grip and handling simply made it hugely enjoyable to drive at any speed it was capable of, even fairly slowly. The R52 MINI Cooper S convertible is not the same thing at all.

On the launch in 2006 we found the original pre-production R56 Cooper S a bit antiseptic. We were promised go-kart handling and we got something with as much feel as a TV remote control. So we said so, and MINI Project Leader Horst Radibojevic seemed to take it to heart.

In developing the 2nd generation R56 Mini Cooper S, has BMW taken the fun out of the MINI? First reports from “first drives” a month ago tended to end with that conclusion.

'MAXI' sized MINI Countryman offers 4/5 seat practicality, a 350 litre boot, low emission chain-cam diesel engines as well as a 185PS turbo petrol, four wheel drive and, from March 2011, a diesel automatic four wheel drive.

The two-seat John Cooper Works GP promises to be the most focused MINI of all. But it costs nearly £29,000 which puts it up against some very talented hot hatches.

It was two years since I’d driven a MINI. That long ago. Yet I could still remember the fun I’d had. Every control sharp and immediate. Steering, clutch, gearshift all feel like extensions of yourself. No slop at all. The engineers tried very hard to make it feel like a go-kart. And they succeeded. In that respect the MINI D is the same.

Unlike the old MINI One, the new One is a 1.4 rather than a 1.6. So you can’t simply programme out the throttle restrictor to get Cooper performance from it. You have to settle for the 95PS it comes with.

The Paceman is a three-door 'coupe' version of the larger Countryman designed to have the same enjoyable handling as the standard MINI but with more room.

The Paceman Cooper SD ALL4 comes in at slightly below £25,000 and offers more practicality than the original MINI hatchback? But is it worth the extra?
