Jaguar X-Type (2001 – 2009) Review

Jaguar X-Type (2001 – 2009) At A Glance

3/5

+Compact Jaguar, launched as V6 only with four wheel drive. Held price well at first.

-Mondeo-based and did not become Jaguar's 3 Series. Prices dropping by 2007. Production ended July 2009.

On average it achieves 91% of the official MPG figure

I don't remember settling into a new car faster than I did with the X-Type D. Just moved the seat once to take the delivery driver to the station and I was comfortable for the rest of the week. Everything I wanted fell to hand, or was in an ergonomic place and worked logically, though that could be due to years of conditioning by Mondeo.

How can I listen to my USB music stick in my old Jaguar X-Type?

"I have a 2005 Jaguar X-Type. On my previous Jags I have had a USB connection for my music stick but I cannot find a USB connection in my current car. How can I listen to my USB music stick in my old Jaguar X-Type?"
If the car hasn't got a USB socket then you will need to buy a new audio system (which will be very expensive) or fit a USB socket with an FM transmitter. The USB socket will plug into the 12v socket and allow you to listen to your music via the car's radio.

Will the Jaguar X-Type become a classic eventually?

"I have an excellent conditioned Jaguar X-Type 2.5 with 58,000 miles on it. Is it worth keeping as a possible future classic?"
Jaguar X-types are taking a while to come through as classics, but there's definitely a following there. However, we'd recommend keeping a car because you like it and enjoy it - rather than because you think it will appreciate in value.

Which tyres for my Jaguar?

"I am advised that my Jaguar X-Type 2004 3-litre AWD will shortly need new tyres. Currently fitted are Pirellis 225/45zR/17/914 what do you recommend please? Would Cross Climates be advisable or would budgets be ok? I am currently doing approx 6000 miles pa."
If you want the 4WD to be effective in winter, fit Michelin Cross Climates, Continental AllSeason Contacts of Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons, assuming you can get them in 225/45 R17. But all season tyres are not at their best in profiles below 50. Do not fit budget tyres. What should I look for before buying a 2006 Jaguar X-Type?

"What should I look for before buying a Jaguar X-Type? It has a new clutch and flywheel."
Start with the basics. Check for rust, especially around the sills and arches. You'll need to keep your eyes and ears open on the test drive - check for signs of overheating and any knocks and rattles from the suspension. Cooling, ECU and electrical issues can affect most X-types. Check everything works - lights, wipers, fans, air-con... everything. Failing transfer boxes are a common weak spot - listen out for whining and look for leaks. You can check the car's MoT history here: www.gov.uk/check-mot-history
