VW Golf reclaims its crown

Mon, 18 May 2009
The Volkswagen Golf has reclaimed its title from the Ford Fiesta as Europe's best-selling car, it has been reported.

According to Jato Dynamics, April saw the model regain its position at the top of the sales chart.

However, the auto information group pointed out the Fiesta was still giving the Golf a run for its money - with registrations up 26.9 per cent last month.

The company claimed small cars in general are performing well, with nine out of the top ten most popular vehicles across the continent being segment B or C models.

Jato boss David Di Girolamo commented: "National government scrappage schemes are really starting to have an impact both on the sales volumes in different markets and on the type of cars being sold."

In February, the group revealed Fiat had achieved the lowest volume-weighted typical carbon dioxide emissions of the top-selling brands in Europe during 2008 - with an average figure of 133.7 g/km.
