Real MPG score: 38%

Easy to drive, comfortable and wonderfully refined, the Volkswagen Golf GTE has lots going in its favour. Unfortunately, when it comes to on-the-road fuel economy, the plug-in Golf falters with poor Real MPG scores. Indeed, against its official 156mpg, the Golf fails by returning just 38 per cent of its advertised economy.

The main down side is that the Phev is Taxed as a gas gussler which is disheartening to say the least

Had one for 3 years - felt totally conned - ok if you drive short journeys and can find somewhere to plug in, but for long journeys absolutely useless once the electric runs out - worse mpg than my old Freelander. To make matters worse lost a fortune selling it. Gone back to diesel F-Pace - considerably more efficient on a long run.

What happens to the tax we pay on fuel when the car is electric? How will the Treasury replace this income, or are we now unconcerned about such detail in the public accounts?

All this ignores the reported awful environmental impact of building the things. A pal of mine has a Lexus soft roader thing which is admirably reliable but does 36mpg overall, so how pointless is that? I too am sticking with diesel.
