Nextbase Insurance launches with big discounts for dash cam users

Published 12 May 2021

Dash camera brand, Nextbase, has launched its own insurance service — Nextbase Insurance — to reward drivers that use a dash cam with discounts. The dash cam manufacturer is the first of its kind to offer car insurance directly to customers.

Nextbase Insurance, which was made in partnership with Cornmarket Insurance Services and underwritten by a range of major insurers (including Ageas and AXA), will start at under £200. The firm says that a third of customers will pay less than £250 for fully comprehensive cover, while more than half can save 30 per cent or more on their policy.

Having a dash camera means that drivers can submit relevant footage as evidence in an insurance claim, speeding up said claim by keeping disputes surrounding liability to a minimum.

The key thing in terms of insurance is that they provide an independent witness that can help prove non-fault in an accident scenario, as well as offering protection against fraudulent claims — which are a serious and increasing issue in the UK. A video of a car being rear-ended by a driver who's clearly using a phone at the wheel can be seen below, having been captured by a Nextbase dual camera cam set-up.

Dash cam footage can typically be uploaded directly to the relevant authority, with various police forces across the UK have implemented online processes. Although, many of them ask drivers not to put the footage on social media because it can affect any legal action being taken if the matter went to court. If footage is already on social media, they request it be taken down.

Dash cam manufacturer Nextbase also has a footage submission portal called the the National Dash Cam Safety Portal (NDCSP).

In October 2020, Nextbase said the 33 police forces currently using the National Dash Cam Safety Portal (NDCSP) have received 21,324 uploads in total since the portal's launch in 2018. It's said to save an average of eight hours of police time per case.

More than half of the videos uploaded to the safety portal also resulted in further police action.

Nextbase Insurance is the next step in making sure every customer is a responsible driver and that we are doing everything we can to keep Britain’s roads safe."
