Geneva Motor Show 2014: All-new Peugeot 108 on the way

Published 04 March 2014

The Peugeot 108 was a welcome and stylish new arrival at Geneva. The new car continues the joint venture with Citroen and Toyota, which both used the event to reveal their equivalent replacements. It's a much more mature looking car, using many styling elements of the hugely-successful 208.

With styling influenced by the 208, Peugeot certainly looks to have delivered large car feel inside, along with improved quality. Like the popular 107, the newcomer is small at less than 3.5 metres long, yet with a wheel in each corner design means it should handle well like its predecessor.

The 108 has retained features from the 107, such as the all-glass tailgate. But there are some modern touches - LED daytime running lights are a must-have option, but these are unlikely to be standard on all versions. As before both three and five door models are offered.

There are two engines in the new 108 line-up, both three-cylinder units which emit less than 100g/km of CO2. The mainstay is a 1.0-litre unit with 68PS which comes with a five-speed manual as standard or an automated manual as an option. A more powerful 82PS 1.2-litre VTi is also available. There are two tyre sizes, 165/65 R14 or 165/60 R15 and all models have Hill Start Assist as well as ESP.

At first sight, the interior captures some of the appeal of its larger models, although we'll stop short of using the word Peugeot likes to say a lot - premium. The retention of the 107's steering column-mounted speedmeter continue as before, but new features include a seven-inch touchscreen with a MirrorLink function that allows smartphone users to operate their phone - with the screen becoming a mirror image of the phone.

There's also the 108 Top, which comes with a retractable fabric roof. It's possible to adjust the roof to any position and it has an aero-acoustic deflector designed to reduce cabin turbulence. It's expected to go on sale in the UK in July 2014.
