Alfa 147 voted 'Car of the Year'

Wed, 15 Nov 2000
Hearts narrowly won over heads in the voting for European Car of the Year 2000 and the small but sporty Alfa 147 beat the big but brilliant new Ford Mondeo by just three points. Third in the top ten was the Toyota Prius hybrid; fourth, the all alloy Audi A2; fifth, the new Mercedes C Class; sixth, the new Vauxhall Corsa; seventh, the new Volvo V70; eighth, the Chrysler PT Cruiser; ninth, the Peugeot 607; and tenth, the Citroen Picasso mini MPV. Good though it may be, the fact that a small, sporty car with excessive fuel consumption (Autocar test: 26.9mpg overall for the 1.6) calls into question the validity of the European 'Car of the Year' award. The judges are a panel of 56 journalists very few of of whom actually have to buy their everyday cars.
