New Citröen Xsara

Sun, 15 Oct 2000
Citröen gave us a drive of the new Xsara, the main features of which are revised sheetmetal from the bulkhead forward, wider track and two new engines: a 110bhp 1.6 and a 137bhp 2.0 litre, both offered in coupe, 5-door or estate car bodyshells. The 1.6SX is likely to be the best seller at £11,995 after Citröen's £1,000 cashback and gives the family man the chance of a fun drive with fine handling and roadholding. The engine is powerful enough, but just a natch slow to get into its stride. No such problems with the 137bhp 2.0 litre which gets up to 100mph very quickly indeed. Both drivetrains are much better than that of the 'old' 1.6. The ultra-economical 90bhp 2.0HDI diesel continues, of course.
