Top 10: Best-selling cars of 2018

The UK new car market declined in 2018 (again) due to uncertainty around diesel legislation and Brexit. However, despite the 6.8 per cent fall in sales, the country still bought more than 2.3 million new cars.

Volkswagen Polo - 45,149 registered

The latest Volkswagen Polo jostles with the Ford Fiesta for the title of best in class. Aside from being spacious and backed by an excellent range of petrol engines, the Volkswagen Polo is more Golf-like than ever before and certainly raises the bar for the once humble small hatchback. Over 45,000 were sold by Volkswagen in 2018.

You'd think buyers would do some research before parting with a lot of money. 50 years of motoring has taught me that Vauxhalls are not only unreliable, they are pricey for what you get and are not great to drive. There are so many good cars as competition.

As usual, it's all down to personal experience NickNike. I have just sold a 22 year old Corsa which had been in daily use by my wife and is still going strong and I use an immaculate and reliable 40 year old Mk1 Cavalier 2000GL , which I bought new in 1978. Admittedly the Cavalier was Belgian-built. Most of the Luton-built ones fell apart long ago.
