Cherished Reg Top Lot in Barons April Classic Car Auction

A registration, rather than a car, is headlining Barons’ sale at Sandown Park on April 17th. But it’s a very special registration number, and one that has never been offered for sale on the open market before.

‘1 NOR’ is said to have been gifted to Lord Romsey (Norton Louis Philip Knatchbull) on his 21st birthday, by his father, the late and hugely popular Lord Louis Mountbatten of Burma. This very early, and historically fascinating registration number carries an estimate of £25,000-£30,000.

It is one of 14 registrations so far consigned to the sale. Others registrations in the sale include FIG 3350 (£500-£600) and 5349 TR (£1,200-£1,500).

Cars include a rare 'garage find', right-hand drive two-seat 1960 Austin Healey 3000 modified in the 1960s for rally use. It has been in the possession of the current owner since 1973, but has been stored in a dry garage and not used since 1979. £8,000-£10,000. Another rally car from the BMC stable is an MGC GT, which has good historic rally history and the all-important FIA papers. This rarity offers good value at £5000 - £7000.

A very pretty Ferrari 308GTB has just emerged from a long period of storage and will require an MoT and some re-commissioning before use, but it offers outstanding value at £13,000 - £15000.

Barons’ sale also includes a beautifully and recently restored 1964 Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb Pillarless coupe. Said to have a fully refurbished interior and body, this car is equipped with original wheels, plus chrome embellishers and a period radio.  £14,000-£16,000.

The MK1 Volkswagen Golf GTi is a highly collectable car, and the 1983Y reg example on offer at Sandown Park is an unmolested, genuine, original and exceptional car and is used on a daily basis. It has all its original panels, has had no welding, and was the subject of a bare shell repaint in recent years. It has won many concours awards in the last two seasons. £7,000-£8,000.
