1934 Talbot Darraq makes £13,508 in Sandown Park auction

Quality reaps rewards at Barons

Results, Sandown Park, July 26th

Jaguar E-types continue to hold the interest of investors, due in part certainly to the fact it is the model’s 50th anniversary year, but perhaps also due to the realisation that the model has perhaps been under-valued for too long. Consequently, top price of the day at Barons’ sale at Sandown Park on July 26th was achieved by a sound and triple-Weber-converted 1969 Series 2 fixed-head, making a little under 20 grand at £19,720.

Quality and preparation are the watchwords at present, and three of the strongest-sellers proved the point. While a diverse selection, the common theme was their superb condition. From the 1970 Mini Cooper ‘S’ MkIII at £12,330 to the 1993 Range Rover LSE at £4,670 buyers did not find condition wanting, but the title of ‘best-presented car of the sale’ fell without doubt to the 1972 Lotus Elan +2S 130. This was perhaps the best example on offer anywhere today and made an appropriately stunning £19,050.

A lovely selection of pre-War cars graced the Esher Hall at Sandown Park too and interest in these was also strong. A mechanically sorted, but cosmetically ‘care-worn’ 1934 Talbot-Darracq was a wonderful thing. It simply oozed period charm and had the comforting appeal of a much-loved leather Chesterfield sofa. It is true that the pre-selector gearbox would be an acquired taste, but the constant stream of pre-sale viewing interest left no doubt that it would find a willing buyer under the hammer, which it did at £13,500.

Firmly in the Vintage category with its 1929 build date, a pretty and nicely-prepared Chevrolet Roadmaster attracted much positive comment. With an overhead valve engine and four-wheel brakes this was a very practical and impressive performer and while making its pre-sale estimate of £14,000, Yanks of this period offer huge value for money and perky performance to match.

There are always some fun lots and bargains in a Barons sale. For fun, it was the 1963 Ford Zephyr with matching Zephyr-shaped trailer in tow at £6,950, while bargain of the sale had to go to the ex-TV star 1988 Daimler Double Six at just £2,250. With a certified gas conversion, this was not only a bona fide classic, but stylish and economical to run. What more could you ask for?

Full results appear below. Barons’ next sale is its British Heritage, Classic & Prestige auction, featuring 100 Years of the Spirit of Ecstasy, at Sandown Park on September 20th.  For further information or to consign a car to the sale, please visit www.barons-auctions.com, email info@barons-auctions.com or call 08454 30 60 60.
