Seven Seat Sports Car

In association with

The girls and I have been planning a weekend trip to Barcelona for months now. One of my best friends is getting married in June and we planned to combine our annual girly week away with her hen celebrations and it was my job to arrange the transport.

I explained to Steve, my buddy at Motorpoint, that I was looking for something that had a bit of wow and lots of space because it would be transporting the four of us loaded with attire for every eventuality to Heathrow airport and we wanted to go in style.

I must admit he didn’t let me down. If ever there were a car that was fit for the purpose, the S-Max was it.

The Ford S Max 2.0 TDCi Zetec has an almost space age design, which oozes tactility unlike many other MPVs with chunkier more oxon like appearances and it absolutely flys.

The hen was delighted with her luxury pick up for the journey which had been dressed in a fun pink ribbon and filled up with balloons and a bucket of champagne on ice for our arrival at the airport. The brilliant fold flat system (FFS) which is so light and simple even my mum had no problem in using it – enabled us to put down the two very back seats to make room for our luggage. Four, Large adult suitcases were merely an appetiser for the S-Max which still had plenty of room for us with our massive travel bags and oodles of space to relax.

The S-Max doesn’t drive ….. it glides along the motorway. Beware though, you do need to watch your speed because you can very easily exceed the limit without realising because the handling is so effortless and the engine is so quiet. When I first picked the car up, I thought it was a petrol until I got out of it with the engine running and heard the familiar purr of a diesel. It never feels or sounds like it’s even breaking a sweat despite being loaded with four birds and their suitcases full to bursting point.

Not only is the S-Max a superb drive, but it also comes with the glorious feeling of total reassurance – sometimes MPVs can feel a little unsteady in high winds at speed but you don’t get that at all in the Ford. The S-Max is loaded with a combination of active and passive safety features. The Ford Intelligent Protection System has lots of features to keep you safe; including ABS, a fully collapsible steering column, which helps to prevent injuries, and clever technology, which prevents you from rolling backwards during hill, starts. The S-Max has been designed honestly with family at the forefront of mind and is a worthy winner of EuroNcap’s top 5 star adult safety rating.

Environmentally, for a big muscle car, the S-Max doesn’t do too badly at all. Its CO2 emissions are 159 g/km, which puts it middle of the VED scale and makes it £150 per annum to tax. Considering you could take six kids to school each day a return of 47.1 mpg is far from shabby.

As well as looking great, feeling great and being reasonably kind to the environment the Ford S- Max 2.0 TDCi Zetec 5dr comes as standard with: 16 inch alloy wheels, leather trimmed steering wheel and gear knob. Sports – style seats with driver’s manual adjustable lumbar support, Dual – zone electronic automatic temperature control (posh air con), ABS, advanced Bluetooth, power operated front and rear windows with global opening/close, body colour door handles and grille with body colour surround.

The one thing I will say I didn’t like about the S-Max was the hand brake – it’s very bitey. It is designed badly and it is very easy to catch your finger between it and the casing, be careful with it because that hurts.

In conclusion, me and my girl friends were, without exception big fans of the S-Max and are all in agreement that at just £14,999 from Motorpoint, you get a lot of car for your money. Ford has achieved something quite remarkable in this car. It combines excellent sports styling and agility with a versatile, robust and spacious interior. The Zetec model adds a touch of class with its luxurious leather trimmed steering wheel and gear knob and sports style seats. Infinitely practical with lots of get up and go. In the words of Honest John: “Ford have done the impossible, they’ve built a seven seater sports car”.
