Driving Lexus LF-A (2010 – 2012)

There are three driving modes of the Lexus LF-A (writes HJ): 'Wet', 'Normal' and 'Sport'. The parking brake is under the dash by your left knee where you can't quite see it, but can feel for it.

1st gear is automatically engaged and you then paddle your way through the rest of them. To get reverse, you pull both paddles back simultaneously and pull a little knob on the side of the instrument binnacle. (Like a Ferrari with the F1 shift.)

Performance is fairly explosive and you'll probably fluff the first few unchanges because they initially seem fairly slow. The engine note is awesome.

Don't be too put off by the relatively low 480Nm of torque at 6,800rpm. You'll definitely be impressed by the 560PS, and you don't get all of it until 8,700rpm, long before which the engine wails like last season's V10 Formula 1 cars. For practical puroses you'll probably be seeing around 7,500rpm, while the power is still rising but before the torque has tailed off.

Since 90% of that torque is available from 3,700rpm, you can pull out of a roundabout in 3rd.

Show the thing a straight and you'll be into three figures before you can blink, and acceleration continues relentlessly. Unfortunately, though we had the LF-A on a great stretch of road, low sun messed up visibility on the corners, and wet fallen leaves were more than a bit slippery, so there was no chance to experiment. Not with a £350,000 car, the only one in the country, and the possibility of cars coming in the opposite direction.

But that first blast off was enough to tell us this is a car in the McLaren MP4-12C category.
