Daewoo Lanos (1997–2002)

What's good

Daewoos generally had below average warranty repair costs in 2003 Warranty Direct Reliability index (index 85.05 v/s lowest 31.93). Link:- www.reliabilityindex.co.uk

A cheap second-hand buy.

What to watch out for

A bit nondescript. Not particularly nice to drive. Interiors not great. Smaller than Nexia, so less space for rear passengers and luggage.

Trim rattles, wind noise, poor mpg

Average performance in NCAP crash tests.

Reasonable new-car buy for a certain type of owner. Questionable used-car buy at less than 3 years old because why would anyone sell it before they had used up the three-year deal?

Used Lanos at Daewoo 'Motor Shows' likely to be ex-rental.

Timing belt and GF50 tensioner pulley replacement at 40k miles or 4 years whichever comes first is critical.

Running problems with 1.6 engine. Don't buy a 1.6 without extensive test driving to make sure it runs properly.

ABS warning light coming on may be nothing more than a loose connection.

One complaint of rear parking brake shoes binding and burning out without the warning light showing.
