Audi A5 Review 2024

Audi A5 At A Glance

4/5
Honest John Overall Rating
Based on Audi’s A4, the handsome Audi A5 Coupe drives very well and comes with a range of petrol and diesel engines. There’s no plug-in hybrid, but cabin and boot space are decent, and the superb Virtual Cockpit dash is standard.

+High quality blend of refinement and handling ability, modern and stylish interior, 2.0 TDI is strong and impressively economical.

-A BMW 4 Series offers more driving thrills. Lack of hybrid option shows Audi A5 Coupe’s gently ageing design.

Audi has had a coupe in its line-up since the 1970s and the latest Audi A5 Coupe follows the tradition of elegant looks and long-distance comfort. It's very much a grand tourer where its BMW 4 Series rival focuses more on outright sportiness. However, the Audi A5 Coupe still feels more lithe and agile than a Mercedes C-Class Coupe. The Audi A5 Coupe is also a whole lot more practical than a Toyota Supra, and it’s cheaper to buy than the Japanese sports car. Read on for our full Audi A5 Coupe review.

The Audi A5 Coupe that was introduced in 2016 is larger and lighter than its predecessor, and its petrol and diesel engines provide respectable power and economy.

There’s a straight choice between petrol and diesel power in the Audi A5 Coupe, all coupled to the firm’s S tronic semi-automatic gearbox.

Across both fuels there are different power outputs on offer, with the most powerful of each coming with Quattro four-wheel drive as standard. However, there is no proper hybrid option at all with the Audi A5 Coupe, though the engines have mild hybrid assistance.

The interior mirrors the upmarket and modern cabin found in the Audi A4, with a minimalist dashboard and a large rotary controller for the colour infotainment system. You also get Audi’s excellent Virtual Cockpit dash display as standard across the range.

More practical that its looks might suggest, the Audi A5 Coupe is a sleek way to travel with a fine blend of driver enjoyment, comfort, and equipment.

Are low profile tyres more susceptible to punctures?

"I bought an Audi A5 quattro and had a nail in a rear tyre about four months ago causing a puncture, then a screw in the other rear tyre a month ago and another screw in that same tyre two days ago. They are 19-inch wheels - are they prone to picking up screws etc? The car feels very rough over certain road. I'm assuming they are low profile. "
Unfortunately lower-profile tyres can be more susceptible to punctures, partly because a wider tyre means there is physically more tyre in contact with the road, although it does sound as if you have been quite unlucky. Other than fitting smaller wheels and tyres, the only thing you can do is ensure your tyres are set to the correct pressure, as an over-inflated tyre can be easier to puncture.

Why is my Audi A5 shaking when it starts up?

"My 2016 Audi A5 has started shaking when it starts up and for the first mile or so, but when I get over 1000 revs it stops. It just had a new fuel filter and full service to eliminate a blockage and drove well after that. However, having sat for 2 weeks over Christmas it's worse than ever. Nothing coming up on a diagnostic but local mechanic suggested dual clutch mass. Any advice appreciated before I get shafted at Audi dealership! "
Petrol or diesel? Presumably diesel. Probably frozen fuel. If the fuel does not have an anti-emulsifying additive, globules can form in it at low temperatures and these partially block the fuel filter until the engine heats up and melts the globules.
