I want to find out the MoT history of a car - how do I do this when it's on a fairly new private plate?

I'm looking at a car with a private registration number. I tried to check the MoT history, but it only goes back to when the private plate was added (two years ago). How can I find out what the original registration number was and therefore search older MoT history?

The quickest and easiest thing would be to contact the owner and ask them for the details of the plate. If they're an honest seller, they'll have nothing to hide.
