It won't be a timing belt. It will be a timing chain. These were of very variable quality depending on when in the life of the link stamping tool the links were stamped out. Because of this VAG abandoned chain cams in the 1.2 TSI and 1.4 TSI and went over to belts in around 2013. The shortage will be because the now obsolete chains come from an outside supplier and replacements have to be manufactured in batches.
