Why is my Nissan Almera not starting?

I have a 1998 Nissan Almera. I parked it up the other day and it wouldn't start. Tried to bump start it but nothing, it just turns over and isn't firing. I was poking around in the fuses and the fuel pump relay and manged to get it to start. It ran fine but the same problem occured again when I switched it off. I poked around again and manged to get it running and did this over 30 times. Now it doesn't even start at all. It can't be much because when it did run it was fine. Any ideas?
By "fuel pump" you must mean the fuel tank lifter pump. The car will run. So the problem could be a duff earth to the fuel tank lifter pump or to the fuel tank lifter pump relay.
