What should I check when buying a used Vauxhall Corsa?

I am looking to buy a Vauxhall Corsa that is 10 years old. It has a full service history, two owners and only 27,000 on the clock. A friend has advised that I should avoid the car if it hasn't had a cam belt or water pump change. Is this true?
If it's a 1.0 three-cylinder or 1.2 litre four-cylinder, it has a chain cam engine. If it is a 1.4 it is belt cam.
