Buying a used Mercedes SL 320 - a wise move or not?

I have seen a 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL 320 Edition for sale, with full history and 87,000 miles on the clock. The asking price is £9970. I have always lusted after this car but could never afford one. Now I am retired I can afford to buy, but am wary of high cost of repair if anything goes wrong. I want this purely a fun car with 3000 miles a year. Is this a practical proposition?
A friend of mine has one, which has been reliable over the 3-4 years he has owned it. Best bought late in model life as this one is. The price is right.
