Did you know that fitting large wheels to your new car, such as my Mercedes-Benz E-Class, can increase road tax?

You replied to DM from Droitwich listing the disadvantages of big wheels Sports version of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. There is another good reason not to buy the C-Class Sport, or indeed any other vehicle with factory-fitted, over-sized wheels. These larger wheels increase exhaust emissions and often push the vehicle up into the next VED band. I got caught out like this with my Mercedes-Benz E-Class (E320 CDi) that came with factory-fitted 17-inch wheels.

Although the 17-inch wheels look very nice, every year I have to pay our money-grubbing government an additional £35 road tax (compared to the equivalent E320 CDi with factory-fitted 16-inch wheels) for the privilege of suffering a harsh and unpleasant ride on the UK's disgraceful, war-torn roads. A vehicle's emissions and VED band are set at first registration. Consequently, had I bought an E320 CDi that originally came with factory-fitted 16-inch wheels and then upgraded to 17-inch wheels, the VED band would not have increased.

Very good point. You may think you are getting a car in a low band, and even order it on that basis, but if you go for the bling wheels option the V5 will show a higher band. The answer might be the original fitting of Michelin’s new Pilot Primacy 3 tyres that alone reduce the CO2 by 4 grams/kilometre (available from February 2012).
