What is the point of hybrid cars?

What is the point of hybrids? I can see how they help reduce manufacturers' emissions across their model range, but new versions will be banned from 2035. At which point, you could perhaps still argue the case for a used petrol/diesel car, but surely values of used hybrids will fall off a cliff long before then? Why would you buy one?

It's all a bit of an unknown, but hybrid cars make impressive fuel savings next to ICE cars and in cars such as the Toyota Corolla and Honda HR-V they have reached price parity with conventional rivals.
