I need to replace my 17-year-old BMW 3 Series - what should I buy?

My 2004 BMW 318 just scraped through its last MoT and needs to be replaced within the next few months. I've really loved my car and have £20,000 to replace it. I would like something similar with a petrol engine, manual gearbox and a traditional handbrake. What do you suggest?

That's simple – get another BMW 3 Series!

There's a new model out which means the older car has dropped in price. £18,000 is enough to get you a 2017 184PS 320i petrol with less than 15,000 miles – it's pretty quick but decent on fuel. You can have it with a manual and you get a handbrake. It's a great car to drive but also comfortable, I'd lookout for a car with adjustable dampers that make it even more comfortable than standard.

Great to drive with a wide range of refined engines. Looks and feels very classy. New infotainment from late in 2022 means it's now entirely up-to-date.
