Why do some lorries have mismatched reg plates?

I was hit by a Polish-registered HGV that pulled out from the inside lane of the M25 without indicating. I have dashcam footage of the approach up to the collision. My insurers tell me that I should have taken details of the number plates on the tractor as they may differ from those on the trailer. Can this be true? Is it legal here? Thanks.

Indeed, and that can be true of any tractor unit and trailer, not just Polish ones. However, if the vehicle has made its way from Poland and got through customs then it's unlikely for it to have different registration plates.
